Columbia Works Wagner in a Blowout

from press release

NEW YORK -- Columbia took a commanding 10-5 lead into the half and went on to defeat Wagner 17-9 on Wednesday, April 21 at Robert K. Kraft Field.  With the win, the Lions improved to 6-7 overall this season.

Kacie Johnson had a game-high six points on five goals and one assist, all in the first half.  Brittany Shannon added five goals of her own and two caused turnovers. Gabrielle Geronimos and Taylor Gattinella each had a hat trick.  Megan Carley scored her first collegiate goal, while Amanda Goodhart had a game-high three caused turnovers.

Columbia took a 2-0 lead on goals by Johnson and Shannon, before Wagner scored two of their own to even the score at 2-2.  The two teams traded goals over the next 16 minutes, with Wagner's Melane Garces' free position goal at 10:11 pulling the Seahawks within one, 6-5.

The Lions attacking unit then broke open the one-goal game with a seven goal run, including four goals to close out the first half, and three to open the second.  Geronimos, Gattinella and Johnson each scored a pair of goals during that stretch to give Columbia a 13-5 advantage.

The Seahawks went on to score four of the next six goals to make it 15-9, but Shannon and Carley added two more in the final 10 minutes of play.  Columbia held possession for a majority of the second half to hold on for the win.

Karlee Blank finished with eight saves in goal, making four stops in each half.

Columbia (6-7, 0-6 Ivy League) will close out the 2010 season on Saturday, April 24 when it hosts Harvard at 1 p.m.  That game will be the final game for seniors Frances Callaghan, Megan Donovan, and Brittany Shannon.
