Columbia Works Wagner in a Blowout

NEW YORK -- Columbia took a commanding 10-5
lead into the half and went on to defeat Wagner 17-9 on Wednesday,
April 21 at Robert K. Kraft Field. With the win, the Lions
improved to 6-7 overall this season.
Kacie Johnson had a game-high six points on five goals and one
assist, all in the first half. Brittany Shannon added five
goals of her own and two caused turnovers. Gabrielle Geronimos and
Taylor Gattinella each had a hat trick. Megan Carley scored
her first collegiate goal, while Amanda Goodhart had a game-high
three caused turnovers.
Columbia took a 2-0 lead on goals by Johnson and Shannon, before
Wagner scored two of their own to even the score at 2-2. The
two teams traded goals over the next 16 minutes, with Wagner's
Melane Garces' free position goal at 10:11 pulling the Seahawks
within one, 6-5.
The Lions attacking unit then broke open the one-goal game with a
seven goal run, including four goals to close out the first half,
and three to open the second. Geronimos, Gattinella and
Johnson each scored a pair of goals during that stretch to give
Columbia a 13-5 advantage.
The Seahawks went on to score four of the next six goals to make it
15-9, but Shannon and Carley added two more in the final 10 minutes
of play. Columbia held possession for a majority of the
second half to hold on for the win.
Karlee Blank finished with eight saves in goal, making four stops
in each half.
Columbia (6-7, 0-6 Ivy League) will close out the 2010 season on
Saturday, April 24 when it hosts Harvard at 1 p.m. That game
will be the final game for seniors Frances Callaghan, Megan
Donovan, and Brittany Shannon.
