Brown Goal Helps 'Cuse Avert Cornell Upset
from press release
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women’s
lacrosse team gave No. 10 Syracuse all it could handle, but a late
goal by Tegan Brown gave the Orange a 7-6 victory on Wednesday
evening at Schoellkopf Field. With the win, Syracuse improves to
10-4 overall, while the Big Red falls to 4-8 on the season.
The Cornell defense did a fantastic job all night against a
high-powered SU offense that entered the game scoring 14 goals per
contest, holding its Central New York rival to half of its average.
Two of its superstars, Tee Ladouceur (30 goals, 31 assists) and
Halley Quillinan (31 goals, seven assists), were held scoreless and
Christina Dove, who entered the game averaging nearly five points
per game, was held to a pair of scores.
The Big Red held a 6-5 edge with less than 11 minutes to play after
All-America candidate Jessi Steinberg capitalized on a 1-on-1 move
to put Cornell up, but Dove tied it up with 8:06 left and Brown
then scored what proved to be the game-winner just 44 seconds
later.
Cornell made the game interesting late, getting the ball back on an
outstanding check by Steinberg on Syracuse goalkeeper Liz Hogan
with under a minute to play to give the Big Red one last chance.
Libby Johnson was able to get a shot off that went wide with seven
seconds left, and Steinberg’s effort at the buzzer was saved,
Hogan’s six stop of the night.
Big Red goalkeeper Kyla Dambach spearheaded a defensive charge with
a game-high nine saves, while Caroline Helmer had three caused
turnovers and five ground balls. All-American Tissy O’Connor
added a pair of caused turnovers and matched Helmer with her five
ground ball wins. Defender Kaitlyn Giles and Kate Ivory, as well as
midfielders Lindsey Kane and Morgan Hale also played large roles
defending the Orange.
Johnson ended the night with two goals and an assist, while
Stienberg, O’Connor, Katie Kirk and Lauren Halpern also
tallied goals.
Jackie DePetris led SU with two goals and an assist, while Michelle
Tumolo had a goal and two helpers. Both Dove and Brown scored twice
of the home team.
Cornell will look to clinch a spot in the Ivy League championship
playoffs when it meets Yale in the final home game for the Big
Red’s six seniors on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at
Schoellkopf Field.
