JMU Tops Hofstra 14-8 in Key CAA Battle
from press release
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- In a showdown of the two
teams leading the Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse
standings, 10th-ranked James Madison downed No. 16 Hofstra 14-8
Sunday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
The Dukes improved to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in league play as JMU
posted its fourth consecutive win.
Hofstra dropped to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in CAA competition as the
Pride saw its three-game winning streak end.
JMU never trailed in the match, although the contest was tied at
2-2 at 18:17 and at 4-4 at the 9:59 mark after Hofstra controlled
five of the game's first seven draws.
However, the Dukes controlled the final seven draws of the half and
took advantage of holding possession of the ball to build a 9-4
lead. The Dukes maintained possession from Hofstra's tying
fourth goal at 9:59 until JMU lost the ball on a turnover with 3:08
left.
In a span of 3:02 JMU scored on five of six shot attempts.
The first goal came from junior Caitlin Sullivan (Kennesaw,
Ga./Harrison) off a pass from sophomore Monica Zabel (Ellicott
City, Md./Mt. Hebron) at 6:44. The after Zabel controlled the
ensuing draw, sophomore Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) netted
an unassisted score at 6:16.
The next draw went to sophomore Annie Brophy (Berwyn,
Pa./Archbishop Carroll), and her pass to Zabel resulted in a Zabel
goal and a 7-4 JMU lead at 4:30.
Zabel controlled the following draw, and redshirt freshman Casey
Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) fed a pass to redshirt
senior Kim Griffin (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford), whose goal
at 3:42 put the Dukes up 9-4.
Hofstra closed to 9-5 at intermission after senior Liz Falco
(Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) scored with just five seconds
remaining. The Pride then opened the second period by
outscoring JMU 3-1 and closed the margin to 10-8 on a goal by
junior Stephanie Rice (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) at 22:24.
That, however, was Hofstra's last goal. JMU called timeout
after the Pride scored its eighth goal, and the Dukes scored four
times on eight shots during the final 19:53.
Hofstra had several scoring threats with the score still
close. A shot by senior Corrine Gandolfi (Smithtown,
N.Y./Northport) at 20:32 was saved by senior goalkeeper Morgan
Kelly (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), and an attempt by junior
Jennalee Trombley (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) at 20:10 hit
the post. With JMU ahead 11-8, Kelly stopped a shot by
freshman Jill Maier (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) at
19:04.
Sophomore Ariel Lane (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) gave the Dukes
an 11-8 lead at 19:53, and a Griffin goal at 12:50 pushed the
advantage to 12-8. Junior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington,
Pa./Abington) tallied the 13th goal at 1:33, and Griffin set up a
Lane goal with a pass with 59 seconds to play.
Hofstra turned the ball over five times in the final 18 minutes and
was held to only three shot attempts in that span.
Eight JMU players scored, led by three goals each from Griffin and
Lane and two apiece from Kimener and sophomore Alex Napoli
(Highland, Md./River Hill).
Hofstra's only multiple-goal scorers were Falco and senior K'Leigh
Vanaman (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy), each with two.
JMU held a 30-21 shot advantage and had 14 draw controls to 10 for
Hofstra.
Kelly finished with eight saves, and Hofstra starting goalkeeper
senior Mary Cuddihy (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) made four saves in
26:18 of play. Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Pandolf (Holbrook,
N.Y./Sachem North) had one stop in 33:42.
The Dukes travel to Old Dominion on April 23, while Hofstra hosts
Delaware that night.
