from press release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The eighth-ranked
Syracuse women’s lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals
during a span of nearly nine minutes late in the second half on its
way to a 13-11 come-from-behind victory against No. 13 Loyola on
Friday, April 16, 2010 in the Carrier Dome. The win improves
Syracuse’s record to 8-4 overall, 3-1 in BIG EAST play, while
Loyola goes to 9-5 overall, 3-2 in league action.
Freshman Michelle Tumolo had three goals during the decisive
scoring run, including the goal that gave Syracuse the lead for
good. Freshman Tegan Brown also had a hat trick, while senior
Christina Dove recorded a team-best six points on two goals and a
career-high four assists. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Liz
Hogan became just the third player in Syracuse history to record
400 career saves. She posted 13 against the Greyhounds, increasing
her career total to 410.
Syracuse jumped out to an early lead as Brown scored twice and
senior Halley Quillinan added a goal as the Orange led 3-0 after
eight minutes of play. Loyola responded with three consecutive
goals to tie the score with 12:07 remaining. After Dove found the
back of the net to give Syracuse a one-goal advantage, the
Greyhounds recorded three of the game’s next four goals to
take a 6-5 lead with 1:06 remaining in the half. Quillinan had two
chances to tie the score in the final three seconds, but hit the
post twice as Loyola took a one-goal advantage into the lockerroom
at halftime.
The teams traded scores to start the second half, and Abby
Rehfuss’ goal with 12:36 remaining gave Loyola a 9-7 lead.
Junior Tee Ladouceur started the Orange comeback when she netted
her second goal of the game on an assist from Dove to cut the lead
to one. Dove then scored an unassisted goal to tie the game and
Tumolo’s goal 11 seconds later gave Syracuse a 10-9 lead with
8:03 left in the game. Quillinan then scored on an assist from Dove
and Tumolo added two more goals, the second coming on an assist
from Bridget Daley, to give Syracuse its largest lead of the game
at 13-9 with 1:03 remaining. Grace Gavin found the back of the net
for the fourth time and Caroline Hager converted a free position
attempt to bring Loyola within two at 13-11 with 14 seconds left on
the clock, but Syracuse won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock
for the victory.
“We need to know that we can win close games,” said
Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. “We’ve lost three by a
goal. We didn’t give up (tonight). I think the players
changed their focus. They hustled and played – and good
things happened. They got their confidence back and took control of
the game.”
Quillinan and Ladouceur finished with two goals apiece, while
junior Lindsey Connell had one goal. In addition, Daley tied her
career high with two assists. Gavin led Loyola with five points on
four goals and an assists.
Loyola outshot Syracuse, 29-23, and picked up 13 ground balls to
nine for the Orange. The Greyhounds also won 14-of-26 draw
controls. In addition to making 13 saves, Hogan led the team with
four ground balls. Kerry Stoothoff recorded five saves for Loyola.
