Zerhausen Sets Record, OSU Empties Bench in Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Brittney Zerhusen finished
with an Ohio State first-half record 10 points off five goals and
five assists, leading the No. 19 women's lacrosse team to a
resounding win, 20-5, over Cincinnati Wednesday evening at Nippert
Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. Eleven players scored for the Buckeyes
(8-4), including the redshirt junior Zerhusen who broke the record
for points in a half that had previously stood at eight set during
the 1996 season by Mara Simpson.
Zerhusen now leads the team in goals on the season with 35 and is
third in total scoring behind senior Kelly Haggerty and sophomore
Alayna Markwordt, who finished the day with three goals and an
assist, respectively. All 30 available players saw action in the
game, including freshmen Alison Cahill and Sarah Fellows and junior
Nikki Jones, who each saw their first career minutes as
Buckeyes.
Ohio State exploded for the first 10 goals of the game, including
eight touched by Zerhusen - four into the back of the net and four
on assists - and three scores from Haggerty. Cincinnati (4-7) broke
up the run with its first goal at 19:01, but the Buckeyes rattled
off four more to close out the half. Sophomore Kelsay Tabor ended
the run with her first tally of the season.
The scoring barrage continued into the second half with four more
in a row, bringing the score to 18-1 with 15:52 to play. With a
field primarily full of Buckeye reserve players, a pair of Bearcat
goals followed before Lindsey Gysin and Rachel Blue found the back
of the net. With the score, Blue not only earned her first career
goal, but became the first lacrosse player to hail from the state
of Minnesota to score a goal at Ohio State.
With a 20-3 lead with five minutes remaining, Cincinnati scored a
pair and Ohio State earned the 20-5 win and its largest margin of
victory since a 21-4 win over Detroit exactly a year ago today. The
Buckeyes finished with a 19-7 advantage in draw controls with a
game-high five coming from senior co-captain Laura Burke. They also
dominated the shot count, finishing with a 33-18 margin.
The Buckeyes return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday against ALC rival
Penn State in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The game will be
televised on the Big Ten Network on tape delay, beginning at 5 p.m.
Sunday. Penn State is 7-5 overall and 0-3 in the league, coming off
a 13-6 to top-ranked Northwestern last weekend.
