Sacred Heart Tops Lafayette in Triple OT

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Sophomore attack Kaitlin
Rochler (Wading River, N.Y.) ended a marathon game against
Lafayette by finding the back of the net, scoring with just 1:02
remaining in the third overtime period. The Pioneers took the
game 15-14 at Campus Field, Wednesday afternoon. The win
extended the SHU's record-long win streak to nine straight.
Sacred Heart stands at 11-4 heading into their final game of the
regular season, while the Leopards dropped to 3-12.
Lafayette senior Maria Drehwing netted a goal with 8:27 left on the
clock in the first half to give the Leopards a 6-1 lead.
Freshmen Cammie Linville and Addie Godfrey contributed two goals
apiece in the early going.
SHU cut the deficit to two goals by halftime as they outscored the
Leopards 4-1 down the stretch. Rochler tallied her first two
scores of the game in an effort to trim the Lafayette lead.
The Pioneers opened the second stanza with three straight, in the
span of 1:03, to give them their first lead of the afternoon.
Godfrey put one in the net to knot the game at eight. Senior
attack Carissa Hauser (East Northport, N.Y.) and sophomore Alicia
Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each posted a goal for SHU to give the
Pioneers a 10-8 lead.
The game continued to go back and forth as there were five more
tied and three lead changes before overtime. Senior
midfielder Cori Horelik (South Windsor, Conn.) scored for the
Pioneers with 1:58 left in regulation to tie the game at fourteen
and force overtime.
Senior Laurine Stafin (Spring Lake, N.J.) started in net for SHU
and made eight saves while allowing eight goals in 38:24 between
the pipes. She was relieved by classmate Chelsea Wagner
(Aurora, Colo.). Wagner saved two shots, gave up six goals,
and earned the win with 32:34 played. For Lafayette, senior
Emily Bjork (Westborough, Mass.) made 15 saves.
Rochler, Horelik, and sophomore Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, N.Y.)
all registered a hat trick. Hauser led the Red & White
with four scores and a pair of assists, while Horelik and senior
Jackie Pierce (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) added three assists
apiece. Godfrey led all scorers with six goals.
For the game the Pioneers outshot the Leopards 41-31.
However, Lafayette converted on five of nine free-position
opportunities, while Sacred Heart only scored twice in seven
chances.
Sacred Heart faces off against Quinnipiac, in a showdown of
undefeated NEC teams, for a right to host the conference tournament
this Saturday at 7:00 pm on Campus Field.
