Youth Leads Hopkins Over Mount 11-6
from press release
EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Johns Hopkins women's
lacrosse team got 10 of its 11 goals from sophomores or freshmen in
an 11-6 win over host Mount St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon at a
cold and rainy Waldron Family Stadium. The Blue Jays improve to 8-5
on the year and remain undefeated all-time against The Mount, who
slip to 6-8.
Sophomore Colleen McCaffrey (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai) got
things going, scoring the game's first three goals in the opening
10 minutes. The Mount called timeout and the Blue Jays answered
with three goals in a span of just 46 seconds to push out to a 6-0
lead. Sophomore Cami Kramer (Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach) scored on a
high-to-low shot off a feed from senior Sam Schrum (Pasadena,
MD/St. Mary's). Sophomore Rachel Ballatori (Rochester, NY/Brighton)
then notched back-to-back goals, both coming off passes from
freshman Katie Duffey (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). Ballatori's first
came just 10 seconds after Kramer's tally as the Blue Jays
controlled the draw and Duffey found Ballatori alone on the left
post for the easy score. Ballatori then scored again after freshman
Courtney Schweizer (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) caused a turnover on
a Mount St. Mary's clear and found Duffey on a long pass. Duffey
took it the cage, drew two defenders and then passed to a trailing
Ballatori, who slipped a shot past Brigid McTavish.
Sophomore Candace Rossi (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) followed with
a pair of her own goals 44 seconds apart and the Blue Jays' lead
was eight with 16:00 minutes still to play in the opening half. The
pace slowed from there as The Mount kept the Blue Jays off the
board for nearly 10 minutes. It was Duffey who would push the lead
to nine, scoring in transition to add a goal to her three assists
on the day. The Mount finally got on the board, scoring a pair of
goals in just 30 seconds, to make it a 9-2 game with 4:36 to play
in the half. Jackie Kearney put Mount St. Mary's on the board with
a free position goal at 5:06. Ashley Johnson, The Mounts' leading
scorer, put another on one the board when she dodged across the arc
and scored on a side-arm shot.
Coming out of the half, it took the Blue Jays nearly eight minutes
to get on the board. Senior Paige Ibello (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale
Prep) ended a scoring drought of 14:28 for Hopkins, when she scored
to extend her goal-scoring streak to 14 straight games. Schrum,
goal-line extended, found Ibello wide open on the right post, and
Ibello one-timed her pass past McTavish with 22:19 still to
play.
Nearly seven minutes later, Mount St. Mary's began to rally,
scoring three unanswered goals to trim the deficit to five at 10-5.
Kearney fueled the run with a pair of goals, sandwiched around a
free position tally by Johnson. After going scoreless for more than
15 minutes, Hopkins finally got back on the board. Duffey,
goal-line extended, fed a tough pass into freshman Monica Fischer
(Baldwin, MD/Fallston) in traffic in the arc. Fischer caught the
pass and got a hard shot off that snuck inside the right post with
6:45 to play. Johnson answered with 3:20 on the clock, completing
her hat trick off a nice feed from Jordan Certeza. That would be it
for the scoring for the day.
Hopkins was led by Duffey, who finished with a career high five
points on one goal and four assists. McCaffrey was the leading
scorer on the day for the Blue Jays with three goals, while eight
different Blue Jays notched atleast a point in the win. For The
Mount, Kearney and Johnson combined for all six goals, while
McTavish finished with 13 saves in the cage.
