Patriot League Releases Women's Weekly Awards
from press release
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – It was an exciting week in the
Patriot League as the first two postseason bids were shored up and
two players set records at their respective institutions. Offense
ruled the day as Colgate's Meghan Lawler bested the Raider
single-season record for assists and has a beat on the school's
all-time record. Bucknell's Carol Donohue, who has missed most of
this season recovering from an Achilles tear suffered at the end of
fall practice, became the sixth Bison to reach 100 goals, while
setting new career records for assists and points. In the midst of
all the goals, Navy became the first team to clinch a berth in the
Patriot League Tournament with its win over American on Wednesday,
while Colgate became the second with its victory Friday at
Lafayette.
Offensive Player of the Week
Courtney Miller, Colgate So., M, Chappaqua, N.Y.
Miller scored four goals Friday night in the Patriot League
Tournament bid-clinching win at Lafayette and added five more,
including the game-winner, in the Raiders' 12-11 sudden-victory
upset over No. 20/NR Florida on Sunday. For the week, she averaged
4.5 goals, 4.5 points, 3.0 ground balls, 4.5 draw controls and 1.0
caused turnovers per game.
Defensive Player of the Week
Lauren Dykstra, Lehigh Jr., M, Mendham, N.J.
Dykstra collected three ground balls and two caused turnovers
during Lehigh's games against Patriot League opponent Holy Cross
and No. 16/18 Penn State.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Christina Roa, Colgate So., GK, Potomac, Md.
Roa picked up two wins during the week for the Raiders, including a
13-save effort against Lafayette to clinch a Patriot League
Tournament spot for the Raiders. She added 16 saves on Sunday as
Colgate upset nationally-ranked Florida. She recorded a .604 save
percentage, averaged 14.5 saves per game and has made at least 10
saves in eight straight games.
Rookie of the Week
Addie Godfrey, Lafayette Fr., A, Princeton, N.J.
Godfrey averaged 3.5 goals, 1.0 assists, 4.5 points, 1.5 ground
balls, 2.5 draw controls and 0.5 caused turnovers during a 1-1 week
for the Leopards. She leads Lafayette with 30 goals and 36 points
on the season.
Honorable Mention Performances Last Week
Amanda Makoid, American Sr., M, Doylestown, Pa.
Makoid averaged 3.5 goals, 0.5 assists, 4.0 points and 4.0 ground
balls per game during American's contests against Navy and Virginia
Tech. Her four-goal effort against the Hokies matched a career
high.
Carol Donohue, Bucknell Sr., A, West Babylon, N.Y.
Donohue became Bucknell's sixth player to reach 100 career goals
and eclipsed the all-time Bison marks in assists and points. She
averaged 3.5 goals, 3.0 assists and 6.5 points during a 1-1 week
for the Bison.
Danielle???Vivonetto, Navy So., A, Rocky Point, N.Y.
Vivonetto was one of five Mids to score three times against

secure a spot in the Patriot League Tournament.
Katie Gardner, Holy Cross Sr., A, Garden City, N.Y.
Gardner averaged 3.5 goals, 1.5 assists, 5.0 points and 2.0 ground
balls as the Crusaders went 1-1 during the week. Her four-goal
effort against Fairfield was a season high.
Patriot League Notebook
They Won and They're In
Colgate took care of business on Friday night, defeating Lafayette
15-8 at Fisher Field to secure a spot in the Patriot League
Tournament. Lafayette was up 1-0 early in the contest, but a
three-goal outburst by the Raiders gave them a lead they would not
relinquish the rest of the way. This week's Patriot League
Offensive Player of the Week Courtney Miller scored four times and
Meghan Lawler added two goals and two assists to pace Colgate. Navy
punched its ticket last week by defeating American, so only two
bids remain unclaimed.
Lehigh Looks to Clinch Next
Lehigh is 3-1 in League play and has the inside track on one of the
two remaining slots in the Patriot League Tournament. All the
Mountain Hawks have to do is win one of their last two League games
in order to clinch a bid, but they face an uphill battle as their
remaining contests are against playoff-bound Navy and Colgate. Holy
Cross and American are the other two teams vying for a postseason
bid, and it may come down to their meeting on April 24 to decide
who goes to the Patriot League Tournament. However, the Crusaders
must first defeat Lafayette on Saturday. If the Leopards upend Holy
Cross, then Lehigh and American automatically clinch the remaining
two spots and the last week of the season will be primarily
jockeying for seeding. There is also the possibility that Lehigh,
Holy Cross and American all finish tied at 3-3, which would
necessitate going to tiebreakers.
Donohue Breaks Two All-Time Records in Same Game
What a week it's been for Bucknell senior Carol Donohue. Wednesday
at Bucknell, she became the sixth Bison in school history to
eclipse 100 career goals. On Sunday at home against Howard, she
exploded for nine points, becoming Bucknell's all-time leader in
both assists and points. Donohue now has 105 goals and 75 assists
for 180 career points. She is seven points ahead of the former
Bison record holder Suzanne Raffaele, who graduated in 2003. Her 75
assists put her ahead of the 73 collected by Melissa Montefusco,
who suited up for the Bison from 1999-2002. It was also the third
time Donohue posted nine or more points in a game.
Lawler is a Helper at Colgate
On Friday night in her team's 15-8 postseason bid-clinching victory
at Lafayette, Colgate's Meghan Lawler notched her 30th assist of
the season, which broke the Raider mark for helpers in a season.
The previous mark, which had been the oldest in the Colgate record
book, was 29 set back in 1982 by Beth Hallenbeck. On Sunday against
Florida, Lawler struck again for five assists in the Raiders'
dramatic sudden-victory win over the then-nationally ranked Gators.
She has 77 career assists, which is two shy of the all-time Raider
mark of 79 held by Shari Krasnoo, and is four points away from
becoming the sixth Colgate player to reach 200.
Navy Aims for Home Field
The Navy-Lehigh contest on Saturday in Bethlehem will be a big one
for the Mountain Hawks as they look to clinch a bid in the Patriot
League Tournament. It will also be an important contest for Navy,
which would shore up the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage. A
Lehigh win would open up scenarios where it, Colgate or Navy could
still capture the regular season championship and top seed.
Mids Receive Votes in Latest InsideLacrosse.com Poll
The United States Naval Academy received seven votes in the latest
deBeer/InsideLacrosse.com Media Top 20, dated April 12. With their
votes, the Midshipmen placed in the 25th spot in the rankings,
ahead of William & Mary and Johns Hopkins, which both received
two votes.
Team Notebooks
American Amanda Makoid scored four goals and Lisa Schaaf
recorded four points, but the Eagles fell 17-12 at Virginia Tech on
Saturday. Kaska Kominski made 12 saves in 50:55 in goal in the
loss. Down 9-1 in the first half, American rattled off six straight
goals to cut the deficit to two, but would pull no closer. The
Eagles are idle until Sunday when they host Davidson in their final
regular season contest at home.
Bucknell In addition to Carol Donohue's record-breaking effort,
junior attack Julia Braun scored five goals and pitched in four
assists for a career-best nine-point afternoon in Bucknell's
convincing 21-8 win over Howard. Becca Devine also recorded a
career-high four assists in the Bison's largest offensive output of
the season. Bucknell hosts Colgate Saturday in its final home
contest of the season.
Colgate The Raiders wrapped up a Patriot League Tournament bid in
their business-like 15-8 win over Lafayette Friday night, then
upset Florida, ranked No. 20 in last week's InsideLacrosse.com
Media Poll, 12-11 on Sunday in sudden victory. Colgate spoiled
Lafayette's Senior Day at Fisher Field as Courtney Miller scored
four times and Meghan Lawler etched her name in the Raider record
book with a two-goal, two-assist performance. Miller struck again
with five goals against Florida in Colgate's second overtime game
in program history. The Raiders trailed 7-2 in the first half
before scoring five consecutive goals to tie the game with just
under 22 minutes remaining in regulation. Colgate is off for six
days until visiting Bucknell on Saturday.
Holy Cross Katie Gardner had a hand in five of the Crusaders' seven
goals in their 14-7 loss at Lehigh on Saturday afternoon. Kat
Sutton added two goals to extend her goal-scoring streak to 25
games. Holy Cross visits Ivy League foe Harvard on Wednesday before
returning home for its last three contests of the season, which
includes a critical League contest Saturday against Lafayette. If
the Crusaders lose to the Leopards, they will be eliminated from
the postseason.
Lafayette The Leopards wrapped up their home slate with a 15-8 loss
to Colgate on Friday night at Fisher Field. Lafayette trailed 9-6
at halftime and outshot the Raiders 19-10 in the second half, but
it only put two past Raider goaltender Christina Roa during the
game's final 30 minutes. Addie Godfrey led all Leopards with three
goals and an assist, while Erin Steel added a pair of goals. At 1-4
in Patriot League play, the Leopards have been eliminated from the
League Tournament. Lafayette has three games remaining, all on the
road, beginning Wednesday at Sacred Heart and continuing Saturday
in Worcester at Holy Cross.
Lehigh The Mountain Hawks rebounded from their heartbreaking
last-second loss to No. 16/18 Penn State by handling Holy Cross on
Saturday, 14-7. Megan Kelly led Lehigh with four goals and an
assist, while Allison Thomas and Lauren Dykstra each found the net
three times. Dykstra's effort ran her point-scoring streak to 46
games, which is eighth-best in the nation. At 3-1 in the Patriot
League, Lehigh will wrap up a Patriot League Tournament berth with
a win against either Navy on Saturday or Colgate on April 24, but
the first order of business is hosting Albany Monday at 3:30
p.m.
Navy The Midshipmen are in the midst of a 10-day stretch without
any games. They are idle until Saturday, when they travel to Lehigh
for a 1 p.m. tilt against the Mountain Hawks. If Navy wins, it
clinches the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will
host the four-team playoff in Annapolis.
