Temple Holds Off Duquesne in Shootout
from press release
PHILADELPHIA – Senior Chelsea Rosiek and
freshman Stephany Parcell scored four goals apiece as the Temple
lacrosse team held off a run by Duquesne (7-8, 2-3) and won a key
Atlantic 10 game, 18-17. The win is the second straight for the
Owls, who improve to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Also recording hat tricks for Temple were sophomores Stephanie
Markunas and Kelsey Zenuk with three goals apiece. Senior Jess
Colucci had a big day in goal for the Owls with 11 saves, including
a huge save in the final 30 seconds.
With two A-10 games left, Temple has surpassed its two conference
wins from a year ago, putting itself in a good position to earn one
of four A-10 Tournament berths.
Both periods were extremely high-scoring, and the first half saw
four ties. Temple once led by as many as three, 6-3, but the Dukes
came back to tie the contest for the fourth time at 8-8 with 2:28
remaining in the first half.
Parcell came off the bench late in the first half and made an
immediate impact, scoring with a minute remaining to give the Owls
a 9-8 lead at halftime. The goal would prove to be the game-winner,
but holding off Duquesne in the second half was no easy task for
Temple.
The Owls looked to be in control after rattling off four straight
goals to start the second half. Temple held a 13-8 lead with 20
minutes remaining in the game. That’s when Duquesne made it
interesting, as Kat McNish scored three times for the Dukes in a
4-0 run that brought them back within one, 13-12 at the halfway
point of the second half.
Parcell scored her second and third goals of the day in another run
by TU as the Owls got the lead back to 16-12, but in the final 12
minutes, Duquesne out-scored Temple 5-2.
The Dukes’ final goal came at 2:09, and Colucci made two big
saves in the final minutes as Temple sealed the win.
The Owls will play their last two A-10 regular season games at
home, starting with a 4:00 p.m. contest against La Salle on Friday,
April 16.
