Quinnipiac Wins Eighth Straight, Can Win NEC

LORETTO, Pa. -- The Quinnipiac University
women's lacrosse team won its eighth straight game Sunday afternoon
against Saint Francis (PA), 19-6, at DeGol Field. The Bobcats are
now 8-0 in Northeast Conference play with a chance to claim its
third straight regular season title with a win in its final league
game of the season at Sacred Heart on Saturday, April, 17. The win
also improves Quinnipiac's record to 9-4 overall. The loss drops
the Red Flash to 2-5 in NEC games and 6-9 overall.
"Today we received a good effort from everyone that played," head
coach Danie Caro said. "It was really important for us to maintain
our intensity, focus, and quality of play heading in the end of the
season, and today we did that."
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Katie Latonick
(Severna Park, Md.) scored the second goal and assisted on the
third, scored by Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.). After
Saint Francis' Catherine Helming cut the deficit to two, 3-1,
Matuszczak netted two more tallies in just under two minutes.
The Red Flash's Chelsea Kent scored to make it 5-2, but the
Quinnipiac offense took over after that, rattling off eight
straight goals to end the period up by ten, 13-3. Latonick, junior
Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) and freshman Lianne Toomey
(Hicksville, N.Y.) all scored two goals apiece during the final
17:25 of the first half as Latonick finished the first 30 minutes
of play with three goals and three assists for six points.
The second half was much more defensive as both teams combined to
score just nine goals. Latonick added a goal and an assist in the
final 30 minutes to post a game-high eight points in the victory.
Sinnigen added a goal in the second half to finish the game with
four goals and five points.
Senior Lyndsey Banach (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored once and added an
assist on Sinnigen's goal as time elapsed in the first half.
Joining Toomey off the bench to add offensive contributions were
freshman Jackie Keleher (Manlius, N.Y.) and sophomore Jane Moldovan
(Shoreham, N.Y.) with a goal each.
Junior defender Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) had a goal
and an assist for a career-high two points. She also had a career
high with five caused turnovers, while adding five ground balls and
three draw controls.
"Kaitlyn (Kelly) was outstanding for us today and we also saw
strong defensive performances from Lexi DeStefano (Brookfield,
N.Y.), Brittany Hauser (East Northport, N.Y.), and Steph Tuorto
(Kings Park, N.Y.)," Caro added.
DeStefano turned aside nine shots in the game to earn her seventh
NEC win of the season. Danielle Pokusa and Kim Peterson split
time in goal, combining for nine saves with eight coming from
Peterson.
Quinnipiac returns home to take on Columbia in the final regular
season game of the season Wednesday, April 14 at 4 p.m. The Bobcats
will then take on Sacred Heart Saturday in Fairfield with the NEC
Regular Season title on the line and the right to host the
conference tournament.
