No. 12 James Madison Doubles Up Delaware
from press release
NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware
sophomore attack Blair King erupted for a career-high five
second-half goals, but visiting No. 12 James Madison University
cruised by the Blue Hens, 18-9, in Colonial Athletic Association
action at Rullo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Delaware (4-8 overall, 1-2 CAA) kept the game close early as the
Hens trailed just 5-4 at the 8:34, but James Madison (9-2 overall,
2-0 CAA) went on to score 10 unanswered while holding the
Hens’ scoring silent for over 20 minutes. King, who tallied
each and every one of UD’s second-half scores, helped
Delaware to net five of the final eight goals, but the run came too
late as the Dukes secured their third victory of their last four
contests.
King and JMU freshman redshirt Casey Ancarrow each scored five to
lead the game, while junior Mary Kate Lomady and Ariel Lane added
three scores apiece for the Dukes. Sophomore Monica Zabel dished
out a game-high five assists and redshirt senior Kim Griffin added
four to help the Dukes to victory.
JMU scored on the opening drive and took a 2-0 lead at 27:22.
Delaware freshman Brittany Griel responded at the 23-minute mark
with a free position goal to put the Hens on the board. But the
Dukes again combined for two scores, with just 40 seconds
separating them, to take a 4-1 lead at 21:55.
Senior Emily Schaknowski went unassisted at 15:35 for UD, but
Ancarrow recorded her first of the day at 12:29 to reinstate a
three-goal advantage, 5-2.
Senior Morgan Marino fed junior Julianna Jeffers at 11:42 before
junior Corinne Drost tallied the Hens’ second free-position
goal of the half at 8:34 to bring the Blue and Gold within one.
The nationally-ranked Dukes answered with four back-to-back goals
to close out the first frame before opening the second stint in a
similar manner. The latter half began with six consecutive JMU
scores to award the Dukes a commanding 15-4 advantage and a running
clock to boot.
King gave the Hens a second-half spark with a pair of goals at
17:56 and 11:41, the second assisted by Schaknowski, to cut the
deficit to nine, 15-6. JMU sophomore Alex Napoli then scored at
10:59 before she fed Ancarrow at 6:59, to again secure an 11-goal
cushion.
King twice went unassisted before tallying her fifth and final
score of the game at 3:18 on a free-position opportunity to bring
the Hens within eight. But it was an unassisted Rebecca McLouth
goal with just 39 seconds lingering on the clock that put a damper
on the Blue Hens’ late run and finalized all scoring at
18-9.
Delaware freshman redshirt goalkeeper Dana Mazzarella suffered the
loss in goal despite making a game-high seven stops as the Dukes
outshot the Hens, 33-15. Senior Kelly Morgan improved to 9-2 on the
season with a four-save performance, while redshirt freshman Alisa
Konishi relieved her with just 13:27 left in the game but did not
make a stop for the visiting squad.
In addition to leading the game in shots, the Dukes also controlled
the game in most every other statistical category. James Madison
won 16 draw controls to UD’s 13, scooped up 18 groundballs to
Delaware’s nine and had just 12 turnovers to the Hens’
18. Each squad committed 12 fouls on the day.
Delaware will now hit the road for three consecutive away CAA
games, the first being played Friday, April 16 at William &
Mary at 7 p.m.
