Miller Nets Five in Colgate's OT Upset of Florida
from press release
HAMILTON, N.Y.—The No. 20 Florida
lacrosse team fell to Colgate in double-overtime 12-11 in Hamilton,
N.Y. on Sunday afternoon. Caroline Chesterman and Caroline Cochran
each scored three goals for Florida, but Courtney Miller had five
goals, including the game-winner in sudden-victory overtime, to
lead the Raiders to victory.
The Gators (9-5, 1-2 ALC) started the game with three straight
goals, one from Brittany Dashiell and two from Ashley Bruns, before
Miller got Colgate (8-6, 3-1) on the board just over five minutes
in. Florida then used a 4-2 scoring run to open up a five-goal
advantage before Colgate started to fight back.
The Raiders scored twice to end the first half, including a goal
with three seconds on the clock, and opened the second half with
three more goals to tie the game at seven with 21:41 left in
regulation. Florida regained the lead on goals from Cochran and
Chesterman, but Colgate answered with goals from Miller and Meghan
Lawler, and Kate Bergstrom gave the Raiders their first lead of the
game at 10-9 with 4:25 to play in the second half.
Janine Hillier charged past her defender and scored to tie the
game with 1:45 on the clock and neither team could capitalize in
the final seconds to force the first overtime in Florida lacrosse
history.
In the first overtime period, Chesterman scored to put Florida
ahead 11-10, but Colleen Bubnack tied the game again and both teams
struggled to finish at the end of the first overtime, forcing a
sudden-victory period.
Miller controlled the draw for Colgate in the final period, and
the Gators never had a chance on offense as the Raiders held
possession and Miller scored just over a minute into the
sudden-victory overtime for the win.
Florida outshot the Raiders 35-30 for the game. Colgate controlled
15 draws, including all five in the overtime periods, and the
Gators had 12 draw controls. The Raiders’ Christina Roa was a
huge factor, recording 16 saves in the game and limiting the Gator
offense to just four goals after halftime.
Bruns scored two goals for Florida, while Dashiell, Hillier and
Colby Rhea each had one goal. Cara Canington had eight saves in the
net.
The Gators will return to Gainesville for their final home game of
the season against No. 10 Vanderbilt next Sunday, April 18, at 1:00
p.m.
