GW Freshman Delivers in Triple Overtime
from press release
PHILADELPHIA -- Freshman Nicole Lacey scored
with 1:49 remaining in the second sudden death session to lift the
George Washington women's lacrosse team to a 7-6 victory in triple
overtime at Atlantic 10 co-leader La Salle Sunday afternoon.
GW has won two straight games to improve to 4-10 overall and move
into a three-way tie for fifth place in the A-10 standings at 2-3.
The Colonials are tied with St. Bonaventure and Duquesne, whom they
will visit Friday and Sunday, respectively, to complete the regular
season. La Salle, which started the day tied atop the league
standings, has dropped two consecutive games to fall to 7-6
overall, 3-2 in the A-10.
Sophomore Megan Seidman, who led GW with three goals, had a shot
saved by La Salle goalkeeper Megan Corliss, but Lacey was there to
pick up the rebound and beat Corliss to the deciding tally. GW is
now 2-1 in overtime games this season. The game-winning possession
was setup by a ground ball from rookie Abby Sneeringer, who
finished with a goal and an assist, following an Explorer
turnover.
Tied at 3-3 with less than 22 minutes to play, the Colonials
scored three unanswered goals in a span of 2:45 to take a 6-3
advantage with 18:40 remaining.
The Explorers halted the streak 66 seconds later and netted goals
at the 8:17 and 3:17 marks to even the score and send the contest
to overtime.
The Colonials held an 18-9 edge in shots in the second half and
carried the momentum into overtime, outshooting the Explorers, 8-4,
in the extra sessions, but couldn't get past Corliss, who made five
of her 17 saves in overtime. GW finished with a 30-23 lead in
shots, 16-12 advantage in ground balls and 11-8 edge in draws.
Lacey won eight draws - one shy of the team's single-game record -
for the second time in three games.
Seidman paced the attack with three goals, while Lacey,
Sneeringer, senior Taylor Donohue (2a) and sophomore Sarah Phillips
(1g, 1a) each finished with two points. Senior Katelyn Langs and
sophomore Kristina Beese added assists. Donohue's two assists give
her 50 for her career, tied with Kristin Karcsh and Meghan
McDonough for third in program history.
Junior goalkeeper Liz Hoffman made 13 saves, her eighth game with
10-or-more saves this season.
