Georgetown Has Huge First Half, Holds Off Cards
from press release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- It was a tale of two halves
for the No. 14 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team Sunday
afternoon as the Hoyas downed the University of Louisville
Cardinals (7-5, 1-3 BIG EAST) 17-13. Georgetown played an
outstanding first half holding a 15-6 advantage at half and opening
the game with an 8-1 run. Georgetown is now 7-5 on the season and
5-0 in BIG EAST play.
"I thought we played really well in the first half, but we need to
put a better second half together," said Head Coach Ricky Fried.
"They won more draw controls and we didn't adjust to the calls
being made on the field."
Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr Academy) played a role in
Georgetown's first three goals. She hit the first for the Hoyas and
then assisted on a shot from Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints
Peter and Paul), finally the Hoyas forced a turnover and she scored
off of the pickup by Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame
Prep).
A free-position goal by Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mount
Hebron) and an unassisted shot from Sophia Thomas (Lutherville,
Md./Maryvale Prep) made it 5-0. Louisville got on the board at
18:39, but just seconds later another Ford to Kirr connection
pushed the lead back to five. Kaestner hit her second of the day at
16:47 and her third less than a minute later taking the pass from
Ford.
Kaestner found Kathleen Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) late
in the half, but the Cards had answers. Thomas and Dina Jackson
both scored on free postions and despite three Louisville goals,
Kaestner, Ford and Thomas made up the difference to make it 14-6 at
the break.
Mary Beth Brophy opened the second with a goal as GU went ahead by
10, but the Cards came back when UofL's leading scorer-Bergen Foley
scored her first of the game. Off of the ensuing draw, Giles found
the back of the cage, however, Louisville wasn't far behind scoring
three in a row.
After a series of five free positions that the Hoyas couldn't
convert, the Cardinals added three more scores inching closer and
closer as the time ticked away and UofL continued on a 6-0 run.
Georgetown didn't look sharp as the Cardinals came within four, but
the Hoyas managed to hold on to get the 17-13 victory.
Ford led the way for the Blue & Gray with six points including
three goals and three assists, Kaestner added five points with four
goals and one assist. Both squads had 34 shots and Georgetown had
one more ground ball (22-21). GU lost the battle on draw controls
20-12 including just one in the second half and both keepers had
eight saves for the game.
The Hoyas will have the week off before hosting Rutgers on Saturday
at Multi-Sport Field at 1 p.m.
