Columbia's Second-Half Rally Comes Up Short
from press release
NEW YORK -- Columbia cut the lead to two with
18:06 to play in the game, but it was not enough to overcome a slow
start, ultimately falling to Brown 14-12 in Ivy League action on
Saturday, April 10.
Columbia found itself in a hole after Brown opened the game with
four unanswered goals. Senior co-captain Megan Donovan got
the Lions offense started with a free position goal, but the Bears
pushed its lead to 6-1 on a pair of goals by Kara Kelly and Alexa
Caldwell.
Columbia started to chip away at Brown's lead with a free position
goal by Olivia Mann and an unassisted tally by Kacie Johnson at
14:54 and 12:19 to make it 6-3. Brown scored three of the
next four goals to push its lead to five (9-4), before both teams
added a pair of goals in the final four minutes of the half.
Donovan converted on her second eight meter shot, and Johnson
picked up her second goal of the game, as the teams entered the
break with Brown leading 11-6.
The Lions came out roaring in the second half and scored the first
two goals to pull within three, 11-8. Shannon ripped one by
Isabel Harvey on a free position shot before Johnson found her
classmate Mann open in front.
Brown got one back on an unassisted tally by Kaela McGilloway at
the 20 minute mark, but the Lions responded with another two goal
run to pull within two. Caroline Seery scored her first
collegiate goal when she bounced a shot by Harvey on an eight meter
attempt at 19:07. Less than a minute later, Johnson set up
another Lion goal, this time by Gabrielle Geronimos, to make it
12-10 with 18 minutes remaining the game.
A pair of goals by Paris Waterman expanded Brown's lead to four
(14-10), but a free position goal by Taylor Gattinella ended their
run. Johnson passed a ball into a cutting Frances Callaghan
who slipped one by the Brown goalie to once again pull the Lions
within two with 5:26 to play.
The Lions won the ensuing draw, but a turnover gave the Bears the
ball and they managed to maintain possession until time ran
out.
Mann finished with a pair of goals and a game-high six draw
controls. Johnson had an all-around solid game, pacing the
Lions offensively with five points on two goals and three assists,
in addition to a draw control, two caused turnovers and a pair of
groundballs. Karlee Blank finished with seven saves in
goal.
The Lions (4-6, 0-5 Ivy League) will hit the road for a pair of
games next week. Columbia will face Quinnipiac in
non-conference action on Wednesday, April 14 at 4 p.m. before
traveling to New Haven, Conn. to square off against the Yale
Bulldogs on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
