No. 13 Loyola Avenges Loss to Louisville
from staff reports
LOUISVILLE – Emily Gibson and Grace Gavin
each scored five goals, and the 13th-ranked Loyola women’s
lacrosse defeated Louisville, 17-10, in Big East Conference action
on Friday afternoon. The loss avenged a loss to Louisville last
season that knocked the Greyhounds out of the final spot for the
Big East tournament.
Gavin scored four-straight goals in a span of just over five
minutes in the second half, spurring an 8-0 Greyhounds’ run
that erased an 8-7 Louisville lead and put Loyola in front for
good.
Bergan Foley scored for Louisville with 23:07 to play, giving the
Cardinals an 8-7 advantage. Gavin, however, reeled off four goals
starting at 21:27. By the time she scored her fourth, there was
16:21 left in the game and the Greyhounds (9-4 overall, 3-1 Big
East) led 11-8.
Mary Heneberry added two goals, and Cara Filippelli, Helen
McCutcheon and Gibson added tallies to continue the Loyola run.
Foley finally broke up the stretch with a goal just 2:40 before
the final horn, but the Greyhounds led 16-9 at that point.
Louisville (7-4, 1-2) took a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into
the game, as Foley, Liz Lovejoy and Katie Oliverio each scored
unassisted goals for the Cardinals.
Gibson took over on offense at that point for Loyola. She scored
twice on free-position attempts and another on an unassisted tally,
tying the score at 3-3 with 16:02 to play in the firs thalf.
Lianne Bobal converted on a free-position shot with 12:01 in the
first half to put Louisville back in front, 4-3, but Meg Decker
tied the game again just over three minutes later.
Lovejoy gave the Cardinals another lead at 2:06, but Abby Rehfuss
sent the teams to the locker room tied at 5-5 with a goal 31
seconds before the half.
Gavin opened second-half scoring with a free-position goal, and
she then assisted on a Gibson score to put Loyola up 7-5 with 26:35
remaining.
Louisville, however, scored the next three, all by Foley, to take
an 8-7 lead.
Hager had a career-high four assists to lead all players. Rehfuss
had four draw controls for the Greyhounds, and Gibson had four
ground balls.
Kerry Stoothoff made 12 saves in goal for the Greyhounds, who had
a 37-33 advantage in shots.
