Delaware Beats Mason for First CAA win
from press release
NEWARK, Del. -- Junior Ali Libertini tallied a
game-high four goals to help the University of Delaware
women’s lacrosse team to a commanding 13-6 Colonial Athletic
Association victory over visiting George Mason University at Rullo
Stadium on Friday night.
Delaware (4-7 overall, 1-1 CAA) outshot the Patriots, 28-16, and
outscored George Mason (3-7 overall, 0-1 CAA) in both halves of
play to tally its first league victory of the 2010 season while
handing the visiting squad a loss in its conference opener.
Following over 10 minutes of scoreless action that opened the game,
junior Julianna Jeffers broke the silence at 19:52 to put UD on the
board. Sophomore Mary Schwartz was soon to respond with a Mason
goal just 47 seconds later, but that was as close as GMU would get
as UD went on to score four consecutive.
Freshman Angela Biciocchi and junior Holly Burman tallied
free-position goals at 17:06 and 15:36, respectively, for the Hens
before sophomore Blair King fed senior Courtney Aburn and Libertini
(top right) for a pair of goals helping the Hens to a solid 5-1
advantage.
Patriot senior Megan Udovich was able to record a goal for the
Green and Gold at the 4:30 mark to bring the game to 5-2, but King
again found the crosse of teammate and sophomore Abagail Fashour
for a score at 3:08. Jeffers then netted her second of the half
just 32 seconds later on a fast break off a UD draw control to take
a 7-2 advantage, Delaware’s then largest of the game.
Athlete photoDespite the five-goal deficit, Mason went on to tally
two consecutive goals to end the half and opened the second stint
with a score to bring the game to 7-5 at 26:39. Though, Delaware
retaliated with five back-to-back scores and six of the final seven
goals to secure the home victory.
Libertini and freshman Brittany Griel exchanged free position goals
before senior Emily Schaknowski went unassisted and drove the
crease to reinstate a five-goal lead at 14:58.
A Jeffers feed helped Libertini to her third of the game at 11:28
and a Corrine Drost goal extended the Blue Hen advantage to 12-5 at
10:48.
After being held scoreless for over 24 minutes, GMU sophomore Emily
Ellisen scored on a free-position opportunity following a UD yellow
card, but it was a man-down Libertini score on a Griel pass that
finalized all scoring at 13-6.
Redshirt freshman Dana Mazzarella (bottom left) made six stops in
goal for UD to record a victory in her first collegiate start.
Senior Sara Longobucco suffered the loss in goal having made five
saves for GMU.
UD edged Mason in most statistical categories including groundballs
(17-15) and draw controls (12-9).
