Drexel Wins CAA Opener Over Old Dominion
from press release
PHILADELPHIA - Drexel's Katie Lawson recorded
six goals as the Dragons trounced Old Dominion, 17-10, in their
Colonial Athletic Association season opener. The win moved Drexel
to 9-2 on the season while the Lady Monarchs fell to 2-7. Lisa
Bernardini recorded a career-high six goals but the Drexel offense
proved to be too much as four Drexel players recorded at least
three goals.
The Dragons opened with the first four goals of the game. Katie
Blazer scored less than four minutes into the contest before
Charlotte Wood knocked a loose ball into the net in front of the
net to double Drexel's lead. Lawson earned her first goal on a
free-position shot before Wood tacked on her second score with
19:24 remaining to cap the game-opening run. The visitors responded
with three goals in a span of less than four minutes that caused
Head Coach Anna Marie Vesco to call a time-out. The Dragons
regrouped as Lawson snapped the Lady Monarchs' streak by taking an
Emily Kane pass and finding the back of the net. Wood followed with
her third score of the day before Blazer notched her second to
return Drexel's lead to four goals. Bernardini put forth great
individual efforts as she scored twice in less than a minute before
freshman Alyse Maiden cap the half's scoring with just 2:32
remaining to send Drexel ahead at the break, 8-5.
With the outcome still in doubt, Drexel came out of halftime to put
the game away early. The Dragons reeled off six straight goals to
open the period to push their lead to nine goals. Maiden picked up
where she left off at the end of the first half as she found the
left corner of the net to score less than four minutes into the
half. Lawson added two more goals while Wood followed with her
fourth of the day. Maiden notched her hat trick with a score with
just over 20 minutes left while Lawson completed the run with her
fifth score at 19:59. Old Dominion threatened to get back in the
game by scoring the next three goals but Lawson and Blazer put the
game away with a goal each to give Drexel a 16-8 lead with less
than nine minutes left. Bernardini scored twice more while Becca
Drylie-Perkins scored the game's final goal to deliver the final
score.
While Nicole Musto appeared just once on the scoresheet with one
assist, she seemed to be everywhere in midfield as she racked up
game-highs of six draw controls, five groundballs and three caused
turnovers. Whitney Johnson earned the win in the cage for Drexel as
she made two saves in the first half before giving way to Rachael
Behrndt in the second half who made six stops. Drexel outshot Old
Dominion, 36-25, and earned one more draw control than the visitors
by collecting 15 on the day.
