Quinnipiac Women Hold Off Wagner
from press release
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Quinnipiac
University women's lacrosse team held off a second-half comeback
push by the Wagner Seahawks Wednesday afternoon for a 15-11 win.
Sophomore Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored four goals and
added two assists for a game-high six points. The Bobcats remain
perfect in Northeast Conference play this season with a 6-0 league
mark and have won six games in a row to improve their overall mark
to 7-4. The loss drops Wagner to 3-9 overall and 2-4 in NEC games
in
2010.
"It was not a pretty win, but a win is a win," Head Coach Danie
Caro said. "We gave our younger players some valuable playing time
and that will be extremely beneficial for this team come the
postseason. Our athletic trainers did an unbelievable job today
keeping the players hydrated and ready to play on a very hot and
humid day."
Through the first 16 minutes of play, Quinnipiac led Wagner by just
two goals, 5-3. Junior Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.)
ended a scoreless drought of 11 minutes by both teams with her
second of the game to give the Bobcats a 6-3 lead headed into
halftime.
Quinnipiac used a 7-1 run over the course of the first 11 minutes
of the second half to put the Bobcats up by nine goals, 13-4.
Senior Lyndsey Banach (Syracuse, N.Y.) and graduate student Katie
Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) each scored two goals apiece in the
run, while Jane Moldovan (Shoreham, N.Y.) scored her first of the
season and Laura Iannotti (Rocky Point, N.Y.) added her
seventh.
Wagner answered with a 7-2 run of its own to end the game. Carolyn
Clark scored three goals during the stretch as she helped her team
pull to within three, 14-11, with just four minutes remaining.
Clark netted two just 38 seconds apart with under five minutes left
in the game, but the Seahawks' momentum was cut short as Gibney
scored her four goal with 55 seconds on the clock to seal the win,
15-11.
Latonick finished one point back of Gibney with five in the game on
two goals and three assists. She and Banach each also led the
Bobcats with three draw controls in the win. Banach's three goals
were the second most by a Bobcat player in the victory, while also
picking up three ground balls.
Senior defender Brittany Hauser (East Northport, N.Y.) had a
career-high four ground balls. Last week's NEC Co-Defender of the
Week Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) had a game-high four
draw controls to go along with one ground ball.
Junior goalkeeper Lexi DeStefano (Brookfield, Conn.) continued her
strong showing this season, picking up the win. Sophomore Noelle
Martello (Westbury, N.Y.) came into the game late in the second
half, making three saves in relief.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday, April 9, when they travel
to Moon Township, Pa., to take on Robert Morris. The teams are set
for a 12:30 p.m., start time.
