Dominant Second Half Lifts UMBC over UVM
from press release
BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Retrievers outscored
Vermont 10-3 in the second half to earn a come-from-behind 15-9
victory over the Catamounts in America East women's lacrosse action
at UMBC Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
UMBC improves to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in America East. Vermont falls
to 2-8 on the year and 0-3 in league play.
The Catamounts held a 5-2 lead after a goal by Samantha Stern
(Cherry Hill, N.J.) at the 9:08 mark of the first half. The
Retrievers answered with three straight goals to knot the game up,
5-5. Stern added the final tally of her three first-half goals with
1:59 remaining to give UVM a 6-5 advantage at the break.
Vermont opened the half with a goal by Kaitlyn Johnson (Meriden,
N.H.) at the 27:51 mark to push UVM's lead to two, 7-5, but UMBC
would rattle off four straight in a string of 10 of the next 11
goals in the game to take over the lead and go on to post the
victory.
Erika Braerman led UMBC with five goals, three in the second half,
and Bria Phillips added a hat trick.
Stern finished the game with her second straight hat trick to lead
the Catamounts.
Laura Barber (Middlebury, Vt.) and Kate Quick made 11 saves each in
the Vermont and UMBC net, respectively.
Vermont returns to action on Saturday (April 10) when it hosts
Binghamton at noon at Moulton Winder Field.
Prior to the game the Catamounts will be taking donations at the
ticket window in Gutterson Fieldhouse for the Friends of Jaclyn
Foundation. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ) is a non-profit,
charitable organization that was created and dedicates itself to
raise public awareness regarding pediatric brain tumors. The
foundation's goal is to improve the quality of life for children
suffering with pediatric brain tumors and help fund research. FOJ
matches a child with a college or high school sports team based on
geographic location. The Foundation was inspired by Jaclyn Murphy,
an 11 year old, who was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a
malignant brain tumor, in March 2004. Jaclyn's strength and
courage, relentless spirit, and joy for life are an inspiration to
those who know her. Jaclyn was adopted by the Northwestern women's
lacrosse team in 2004 and has been an honorary member of the
Wildcat team ever since. The Catamounts, who have raised money for
the Foundation, will wear special warm-up jerseys.
