Brown Wins Inaugural Ocean State Cup
from press release
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Brown women's lacrosse team
(5-4) scored the first nine goals of the game and never looked back
en route to a 19-4 win over Bryant (2-10) in the inaugural Ocean
State Cup contest Tuesday evening in Smithfield. Sophomore Kaela
McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) led all goal scorers with a career-high
seven points on three goals and four assists.
In all, Brown had 10 different goal scorers, including junior Alexa
Caldwell (Middletown, MD) and sophomore Nancy Baker (Upper
Arlington, OH), who notched the first goals of her career, each
with three, and senior Kara Kelly (Garden City, NY) and sophomore
Katelyn Caro (Andover, MA) each with two.
Kelly opened the scoring just 46 seconds into the game, connecting
on a free position attempt to give Brown a 1-0 lead. Freshman
Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) and McGilloway would add two more,
both unassisted, over the next 1:33 to give the Bears a 3-0 lead
less than three minutes into the game.
The Bears worked on their settled offense over the next 10 minutes,
adding four more goals, all assisted, to increase their lead to 7-0
at the 11:46 mark. During the spree, Baker, Caro, Caldwell, and
junior Paris Waterman (Newark, DE) all scored, while Waterman,
Caldwell, and McGilloway (two) each had assists.
Waterman increased the lead to 8-0 at 12:28 before Minges fed
sophomore Julia Keller (Concord, MA) for Brown's ninth goal with
10:43 left in the half.
Bryant's Kayla Manzi and Lauren Sheridan scored back-to-back goals
5:54 apart to stop Brown's scoring spree, but a pair of unassisted
goals for the Bears by Caro and sophomore Margaret Polanin
(Chatham, NJ) 13 seconds apart during the final two minutes, gave
Brown an 11-2 lead at the half.
McGilloway fed Caldwell just 1:29 into the second half, as Brown
picked up where it left off. Goals by Kelly, Caldwell, McGilloway
(two), and Baker during the next 16 minutes stretched the lead to
17-2 before Sheridan scored her second of the day with 10:40
remaining cutting the lead to 17-3.
Goals by freshman Sasha Sassson (London, England) and Baker during
the final 10 minutes gave Brown its largest lead of the night,
19-3. The Bulldogs added a fourth tally with 2:13 left to account
for the 19-4 final.
Six different Bears - Minges, Caldwell, Baker, Kelly, junior
Krissi Penikis (Swarthmore, PA), and freshman Kasey Wagner
(Southborough, MA) led Brown's ground ball efforts with three each.
Waterman won three draw controls to lead the Bears, while Caldwell
led Brown with three caused turnovers.
Sophomore Isabel Harvey (Baltimore, MD) stopped five shots, while
allowing two goals, in 36 minutes to earn the win, while freshman
Brienne Donovan (Pine Township, PA) had three saves and two goals
against in 24 minutes.
Brown continues a busy week of three straight road games in six
days this Saturday when it travels to New York City to face
Columbia in a 1:00 p.m. Ivy contest. The Bears turn around the next
day to face Manhattan at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
