Yale's Rhodes Snags Ivy League POW
from press release
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman midfielder Devon Rhodes (E.
Northport, N.Y.) was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week
Monday. Rhodes had 10 goals last week, including a remarkable
effort in her first career game against archrival Harvard. Rhodes
scored eight goals against the Crimson -- including the game-winner
-- in a 17-13 Yale win Saturday at Reese Stadium. That was the most
goals in a game by a Yale player in 10 years, dating back to an
eight-goal effort by Amanda Walton '02 against Notre Dame. Rhodes
played turnover-free lacrosse against the Crimson and shot .667
(eight for 12).
Rhodes, who has been held scoreless just twice this season, had a
pair of goals against New Hampshire on Wednesday. In addition to
her scoring, she also contributed four draw controls for the
week.
Rhodes' work against Harvard sparked a review of the record books.
While individual game records from Yale's 35 years of varsity
women's lacrosse are incomplete, the only record that could be
found of a player scoring more goals in a game is the 11 that Tracy
Ball '81 scored vs. Cornell Apr. 5, 1980. The Ivy League had listed
the single-game Ivy record as nine (Penn's Lisa Romig vs. Dartmouth
in 1981), but pending confirmation Ball's performance will now be
listed as the record.
In addition to Walton and Rhodes' efforts, other eight-goal games
for Yale include Heather Bentley '00 vs. Dartmouth Mar. 27, 1999
and Emily Montgomery '78 vs. Northeastern Apr. 10, 1978. The NCAA
record for goals in a game is 12.
Rhodes leads the Bulldogs in goals (24), points (31) and draw
controls (16). She is a graduate of Northport High School, where
she was a two-time All-American, and also played for the Long
Island Yellow Jackets.
Rhodes is the second Bulldog to earn one of the Ivy League's weekly
awards this season. Junior midfielder/defender Kaitlyn Flatley
(Berwyn, Pa.) was named offensive player of the week Mar. 22.
