Lafayette Nips Columbia 13-11
from press release
NEW YORK - A 13-11 Lafayette victory over
Columbia handed the women's lacrosse team its third victory in the
past four games and gives the team momentum heading into the final
stretch of the 2010 season.
The win comes as Lafayette (3-10) prepares to host Patriot League
opponent Colgate on Friday night at Fisher Stadium, one of only two
league games remaining on the schedule.
The Leopards survived a back-and-forth battle that saw Columbia
(4-5) pull within a single goal at the one minute mark, but
freshman Cammie Linville added an insurance goal with 21 seconds
remaining.
Lafayette was led offensively by a pair of freshmen as Addie
Godfrey recorded four goals and Victoria Maxon added three. Godfrey
also finished with an assist
Goalies Alexa Biale and Emily Bjork again split time in goal with
Biale earning 38 minutes of playing time. The sophomore allowed
just five goals while making eight saves. Bjork gave up six goals
and had a save in her 22 minutes.
Courtney Bryan got the Leopards on the board first with a goal
after one minute of play but the Lions netted two of their own in
less than 75 seconds to grab the early 2-1 lead.
Maxon knotted it at 2-2 at the 23:10 mark off a Jessica Rothstein
assist but that score lasted just 30 seconds before the Lions'
Sarah Avallone made it 3-2.
Columbia went ahead 6-3 with 7:23 to play in the first half and the
Lions maintained a 7-5 edge with 5:49 to play, but the Leopards
held them scoreless for the half's final minutes to keep themselves
within two.
It remained a two-goal game (8-6) after three minutes of
second-half action but with Columbia only ahead 10-9 with 13
minutes left, the lead was well within the Leopards' reach.
Lafayette used the remaining minutes to mount its comeback. Godfrey
tied it at 10 with 11:40 on the clock and Linville's score gave the
Leopards a two-goal cushion (12-10).
Columbia's Brittany Shannon scored with one minute remaining but
Linville came through with the much-needed insurance goal with 21
seconds on the clock to preserve the Leopard victory.
