CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy traveled to Hamilton on
Saturday to take on a Colgate team it had never defeated in three
tries and lost to in last year's Patriot League Championship game.
This weekend's result was a little bit different, as the Mids came
from behind to post a 12-8 win over the Raiders. American did its
best to keep pace with Navy, setting up another first-place
showdown Wednesday in Annapolis.
Offensive Player of the Week
Katrina Nietsch, Navy Jr., M, New Canaan, Conn.
Nietsch scored three goals against Colgate, including the first of
the second half that started Navy's seven-goal outburst, during
theâMids' 12-8 victory over the Raiders. Her four
points are a new career best while she tied her career high with
three draw controls.
Defensive Player of the Week
Emma Larkin, American So., M, Cockeysville, Md.
Larkin set new career bests with five ground balls and forced six
turnovers as American moved to 3-1 in the Patriot League in its
19-12 win over Lafayette. She leads the Eagles in both
categories.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Amy Martin, Holy Cross Jr., GK, Bloomfield, Mich.
Martin made 15 saves on 22 shots as the Crusaders earned their
first League win of the season against Bucknell. She set a career
high for save percentage of .682 in the victory.
Rookie of the Week
Taylor Zebrowski, Holy Cross Fr., A, Verona, N.J.
Zebrowski set new career highs for goals and points with her
five-goal, six-point effort in Holy Cross' win over Bucknell. She
has points in nine straight games, her 18 goals are second-best on
the team and her 24 points are third.
Honorable Mention Performances Last Week
Inneka Carmola, Lehigh Sr., A, Amsterdam, N.Y.
Carmola averaged 3.0 goals, 3.0 points and 0.5 ground balls during
a 1-1 week for the Mountain Hawks.
Addie Godfrey, Lafayette Fr., A, Princeton, N.J.
Godfrey had another strong week, averaging 3.5 goals, 1.0 assists,
4.5 points, 1.5 ground balls and 1.5 draw controls as Lafayette
defeated Manhattan but lost to American. She netted the game-winner
versus the Jaspers.
Erin Steel, Lafayette So., A, Lumberton, N.J.
Averaged 3.5 goals, 0.5 assists, 4.0 points and 1.0 ground ball for
the Leopards during a 1-1 week.
Colleen Bubnack, Colgate Jr., M, Syracuse, N.Y.
Averaged 2.5 goals, 2.5 assists, 5.0 points, 0.5 ground balls, 1.5
draw controls and 0.5 caused turnovers for the Raiders during a 1-1
stretch.
Patriot League Notebook
Navy Wins Battle for First
Navy and Colgate waged a back-and-forth affair during the first
half of Saturday's contest. The Raiders held an 8-5 lead at
halftime, but the Mids' defense threw up a wall in the second half
and their offense scored seven times to secure the 12-8 victory.
Navy is 3-0 in the Patriot League for the first time in program
history and won for the first time in four tries against
Colgate.
Another Tussle for First Ensues on Wednesday
Fresh off the heels of the Raider/Midshipmen contest for first,
Navy and American will take to the field Wednesday in Annapolis
also with first place on the line. With a win, the Midshipmen would
clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. If the Eagles pull
off the victory, they would take over first place in the League at
4-1 and would secure a postseason berth if Lehigh defeats Holy
Cross on Saturday.
Rawlick, Dykstra Named to 2010 Tewaaraton Watch List
Navy senior Erin Rawlick and Lehigh junior Lauren Dykstra are on
the 2010 Tewaaraton Watch List for women's lacrosse, it was
announced March 5. The award was formally instituted in August 2000
and is given annually to the NCAA men and women's lacrosse players
of the year.
Dykstra Recognized by Matt DaSilva of Lacrosse Magazine
Lauren Dykstra of Lehigh, who was voted the Patriot League's
Preseason Offensive Player of the Year by League coaches and sports
information directors, was also recognized by Lacrosse Magazine
writer Matt DaSilva before the season's opening draw. DaSilva
created his own preseason team of All-Americans (which he called
the All-DaSilva Team). Dykstra occupied one of the attack
positions, alongside Northwestern's Katrina Dowd and Kelly Haggerty
of Ohio State.
Team Notebooks
American The Eagles have won two straight and three of
their last four after Saturday's 19-12 win over Lafayette. Amanda
Makoid, Samantha Marshall and Lauren Schoenberger each scored three
times, while Emily Stankiewicz scored four points. American plays
its next two on the road starting Wednesday in another crucial
League contest against Navy, then Saturday for a non-League tilt at
Virginia Tech.
Bucknell The Bison finished the week 0-2 after a 12-3 loss at home
to Le Moyne and a 15-7 League defeat at Holy Cross. Senior Carol
Donohue saw her first game action against the Dolphins on
Wednesday, then scored twice and added an assist against the
Crusaders in her first start of the year. She's now six points away
from Bucknell's all-time scoring record. Five other Bison scored
against Holy Cross and Alyssa DeLorenz made 11 saves in net.
Bucknell has two non-League contests this week, including Wednesday
at Binghamton and Sunday at home versus Howard.
Colgate Meghan Lawler scored four goals and added three assists in
Colgate's 15-8 win over Binghamton on Tuesday. She added scored
twice and had four points in Saturday's 12-8 loss to Navy. Colleen
Bubnack notched five points in the loss to the Mids. With 28
assists, Lawler is one shy of tying the single-season mark set by
Beth Hallenbeck in 1982. She is tied for eighth in Colgate history
with 116 goals and is 10 assists away from breaking the Raider mark
of 79 career helpers held by Shari Krasnoo. Lawler's 186 career
points are sixth all-time at Colgate. The Raiders visit Lafayette
Friday night before returning home to face Florida, ranked No. 20
in the latest InsideLacrosse.com Media Poll, on Sunday.
Holy Cross Freshman Taylor Zebrowski had a career day with five
goals and six points to lead the Crusaders to a 15-7 win over
Bucknell on Saturday in Worcester. Katie Gardner added two goals
and two assists, while Amy Martin made 15 saves in net. Her .682
save percentage for the game set a career high. The Crusaders are
3-8 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League. They host Fairfield
Tuesday before visiting Lehigh on Saturday for another League
contest.
Lafayette The Leopards had their two-game winning streak snapped in
Saturday's 19-12 loss to American. Margaux LeBuffe and Erin Steel
each scored three times, while Addie Godfrey and Cammie Linville
scored two goals apiece. Emily Bjorke and Alexa Biale split the
time in net with each making four stops. Lafayette visits Columbia
on Tuesday afternoon before returning home to entertain Colgate on
Friday night for its final home game of the season.
Lehigh Inneka Carmola and Kelly Draper scored four goals apiece as
Lehigh snapped its two-game losing streak by overwhelming Canisius,
16-5, on Saturday in Buffalo. Lauren Dykstra added two more goals
to her total, while Megan Kelly scored twice and Lauren Murray
added a goal and an assist. Lehigh begins a four-game home stand
Wednesday evening by hosting nationally-ranked Penn State for a
7:30 p.m. faceoff.
Navy The Mids improved to 3-0 in Patriot League play for the first
time in program history with their 12-8 win at Colgate on Saturday.
Danielle Vivonetto scored four times and Katrina Nietsch netted
three and added an assist. Navy's defense shined as they shut out
Colgate over the game's final 30:00 to turn an 8-5 halftime deficit
into a 12-8 victory. The Mids host American on Wednesday and then
are idle until they visit Lehigh on April 17.
