BALTIMORE - Ansley Stewart scored the game-winning goal
with 6.1 seconds left to lift #14 Notre Dame past #13 Loyola,
11-10, in BIG EAST Conference women's lacrosse action on Monday
afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Following a Loyola turnover, Notre Dame's Kaitlin Kenna cleared the
ball to Gina Scioscia who fed a pass to Stewart charging toward the
cage.
She one-hopped a shot into the net for the game-winner.
Midfielder Grace Gavin scored five points on three goals and two
assists to lead the Greyhounds. Junior Abby Rehfuss also recorded a
hat trick and Cara Filippelli scored twice for Loyola.
Loyola got on the board first as Gavin converted off an assist from
Ana Heneberry at 25:06.
After Notre Dame tied the match at one, Filippelli and Rehfuss
scored consecutive goals to give the 'Hounds a 3-1 lead.
The Irish cut the lead to one at 17:31, but Loyola scored the next
three on goals by Rehfuss, Meg Decker and Emily Gibson.
Maggie Tamasitis and Betsy Mastropieri scored just before the half
as Loyola went into the locker room with a 6-4 lead.
Gina Scioscia scored 18 seconds into the second half, cutting
Loyola's lead in half, before back-to-back goals by Gavin gave
Loyola an 8-5 lead at 25:56.
The Irish then scored five unanswered goals as Shaylyn Blaney
recorded three of them, giving the Irish a two-goal lead at
10-8.
Loyola fought back to tie the game at ten, before Stewart's
game-winner.
Loyola goalkeeper Kerry Stoothoff made 11 saves in the loss as
Notre Dame's Ellie Hilling made four stops.
Ana Heneberry led the team with a career-high six ground balls and
a season-high four caused turnovers.
Notre Dame (6-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) out shot Loyola, 26-17, with a 14-6
advantage in the second half. The Irish also held a 14-8 advantage
in draw controls.
The Greyhounds (8-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) are back in action when they
travel to Louisville April 9 for a BIG EAST Conference matchup.
Opening draw is slated for 1:00 pm.
