Waldron Sparks No. 7 Towson Over Delaware
from press release
TOWSON, Md. – Freshman midfielder Ashley
Waldron (Cicero North Syracuse H.S./Clay, N.Y.) scored two goals
and added a season-high five assists as 7th-ranked Towson
University earned its third win in the last four games with a 17-8
victory over the University of Delaware (3-7) in the Colonial
Athletic Association opener for both teams at Johnny Unitas®
Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The win allowed the Tigers to remain unbeaten at home this year
with a perfect 5-0 record. Meanwhile, the Blue Hens lost for the
third time in five road games this year.
“It’s great to get a win in our CAA opener today. We
have been playing really well this season and the next challenge
for us is the CAA schedule where things are a little more
emotional,” Towson Coach Missy Doherty said. “We know
that every game is going to be tough in the conference and we know
that we have to defend our status as the seventh-ranked team in the
nation.”
After the teams traded goals in the opening six minutes of the
first half, the Tigers took a 3-1 lead with 19:55 left in the
stanza as junior attacker Jess Dunn (Fallston H.S./Forest Hill,
Md.) and senior midfielder Nikki Marcinik (Southern H.S./Deale,
Md.) scored back-to-back unassisted goals.
However, the Blue Hens responded with consecutive goals from
freshman attacker Brittany Griel (Chantilly H.S./Fairfax, Va.) and
junior attacker Corinne Drost (Hereford H.S./Parkton, Md.) in a
25-second span, tying the game at 3-3 with 15:07 remaining in the
half.
The teams traded goals before the Tigers scored four of the next
five goals to take an 8-5 lead with 3:03 left in the first half on
a free position goal by senior midfielder Steph Taylor (Cocalico
H.S./Denver, Pa.). But, the Blue Hens closed the gap to 8-6 with 29
seconds left in the period when sophomore midfielder Stephanie
Allen (Pine Bush H.S./Montgomery, N.Y.) scored off a Drost feed for
her tenth goal of the season.
The Tigers opened the second half by scoring four unanswered goals
over the first seven minutes, extending their advantage to
12-6.
The teams traded goals later in the half before sophomore attacker
Blair King (Dulaney H.S./Timonium, Md.) tallied her seventh goal of
the season off an assist from junior midfielder Ali Libertini
(Mount de Sales Academy/Parkton, Md.), cutting the Delaware deficit
to 13-8.
However, the Tigers responded by four goals over the final 17
minutes to secure the victory. Waldron was involved in all four
goals, scoring once along with three assists.
While Waldron led the Tigers with her seven-point effort, Fratzke
contributed a game-high four goals. Marcinik and Dunn each scored
three goals for the Tigers, who outshot Delaware by a 41-26
margin.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Teeters (Centennial H.S./Ellicott City,
Md.) made ten saves, including seven in the second half, as the
Tigers held Delaware to just two goals in the final 30 minutes.
Senior attacker Courtney Aburn (John Carroll H.S./Jarrettsville,
Md.) led the Blue Hens in a losing effort by scoring a goal with
two assists. King and junior midfielder Holly Burman (Dulaney
H.S./Timonium, Md.) each scored two goals for the Blue Hens, who
dropped their third game in the last four outings. Junior
