Hoya Women Outlast Notre Dame 12-10
from press release
WASHINGTON - The No. 15 Georgetown University
women's lacrosse squad defeated the No. 14 University of Notre Dame
Fighting Irish (5-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday at Multi-Sport
Field. The Hoyas opened the game with a 3-0 run and managed to hold
off a late Notre Dame attack to get the 12-10 victory. The Blue
& Gray is now 4-5 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST play.
"Today was a team effort, we have a lot of contributions from
different people," said Head Coach Ricky Fried. "We played well
defensively for a majority of the game which made a
difference."
After neither team could find the back of the cage for the opening
ten minutes of the game, Georgetown went on a scoring run hitting
three-consecutive goals in two minutes to take the lead. Notre Dame
answered, but GU quickly added three more including senior attacker
Molly Ford's (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) second of the
afternoon.
Unfortunately, the large lead wouldn't last as the Hoyas had a
defensive lapse allowing UND a 6-0 run to tie it with 4:13
remaining in the half. At 2:51 junior attacker Kathleen Dwyer
(Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy), starting her first game of the
season, hit a goal off of a pass from classmate Jacqueline Giles
(Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) to put the Hoyas ahead 7-6 at the
break.
Notre Dame's Kailene Abt tallied two quick scores to open the
second and the Irish took their first lead of the game. Just
minutes later, freshman Sophia Thomas (Luthersville, Md./Maryville
Prep) notched her first goal of the game to even the score at
eight.
UND answered, but that would be their last lead of the contest as
the Hoyas managed back-to-back goals from Dwyer and classmate Sarah
Seats (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School). Abt added one more, but
it wouldn't be enough as sophomore Kelly Barnes (St. David's,
Pa./Radnor) and freshman Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis) both
found the back of the net to get the win making the final
12-10.
Georgetown boasted a balanced attack with nine different players
scoring including two goals from Ford, Seats and Dwyer. Giles
posted a team-best two assists. The Blue & Gray outshot Notre
Dame 32-21 and held a huge 18-6 advantage on draw controls. GU also
had three more ground balls and just 14 turnovers.
"We fought the entire game," said Fried. "Even when we were
leading, we continued to play hard and when they came back we
didn't slack off. We played hard the whole game which has been a
point of emphasis this season."
