Sacred Heart Remains Unbeaten in NEC
from press release
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Sacred Heart senior Cori
Horelik (South Windsor, CT) scored three goals and fellow senior
Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY) scored the game winner 1:22 in
to overtime to lift the Pioneers to their fifth-straight win
Thursday afternoon, 9-7 over visiting Mount St. Mary's. The Mount
kept Hauser, the Pioneer's leading scorer, off the scoreboard until
her unassisted overtime game winner kept SHU unbeaten in the
Northeast Conference at 5-0.
The Pioneers (7-4, 5-0 NEC) tied the game with 10:59 left and held
the Mount off the scoreboard the last 22 minutes for the win.
Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) made six of her 11
saves in the second half and overtime to earn the win.
Mount St. Mary's (4-6, 2-2 NEC) scored first on a Lucy Pompa
unassisted marker five and half minutes in and built a 4-2 lead by
the 18:17 mark. The Pioneers went to work offensively and closed
the half with three-straight goals for a 5-4 halftime lead. Horelik
scored her first at 17:42 off a feed from sophomore Kate Kmiotek
(Farmingville, NY) and followed with her second at 12:05 from
sophomore Kaitlin Rochler (Wading River, NY). Sophomore Alicia
Fuchs (Bay Shore, NY) put SHU up 5-4 with 5:26 on the clock hitting
from a Hauser feed.
Mount wasted little time tying it back up just 56 seconds into the
second half as Esther Rufolo scored unassisted. Kmiotek put SHU
back up one, 6-5, scoring just 27 second later. The Mountaineers
posted back-to-back scores to go up 7-6 with 15:36 left. Emily
Kirby scored off a feed from Jordan Certeza at 22:16 and Ashley
Johnson set up Certeza at 15:36 for a 7-6 lead.
Horelik pulled the game even at the 10:59 mark, scoring on an
8meter attempt for her third of the game. Each team could manage
just one shot in the final 10 minutes of regulation and the
Pioneers took control of the ball with 3:28 left looking to hold
for the last shot. The Mount locked down on the SHU offense and
time ran out before the Pioneers could get a shot off.
Mount St. Mary's took the opening draw of overtime and had a chance
to strike first as Pompa was awarded an 8meter attempt 51 seconds
in. Wagner stood tall and turned away the Pompa attempt as junior
Elizabeth Drehwing (Wyckoff, NJ) scooped up the loose ball and the
Pioneers cleared setting up the Hauser marker 30 seconds later. The
Mount was able to get off two more shots in the overtime, a Rufolo
attempt wide and Johnson's attempt produced Wagner's 11 save of the
afternoon.
SHU senior Farra Coppola (Wantagh, NY) tacked on an insurance goal
with 56 seconds left and then won the ensuing draw giving the
Pioneers the chance to run out the clock.
Sacred Heart will play host to the Monmouth Hawks on Saturday
afternoon at 12 noon.
