from press release
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The #19 Catholic
University’s women’s lacrosse team earned a thrilling
7-6 victory over #14 Williams College at Cardinal Stadium Tuesday
afternoon, improving the team’s overall record to 3-5 on the
year.
It was a tug-of-war all afternoon between the evenly matched
squads. Williams struck first with a goal from Tina Nawrocki. The
home-standing Cardinals fired back with two goals of their own from
Laura Haring, and Katie Buonpastore. The Ephs answered moments
later with two of their own consecutive goals, giving the visitors
a 3-2 advantage.
The Cards turned up the offensive heat midway through the period,
as Mary Swarthout blasted two unassisted goals into the back of the
net. Caroline Taltavull also found the back of the net at the 7
minute mark. Williams scored the final two goals of the first half,
knotting the game at 5-5.
The Ephs once again struck first in the next period, as Nawrocki
scored her second goal of the night. Meghan Brady answered 14
seconds later that locked the teams in the fifth tie of the
evening. As the final minutes of the game ticked away, Buonpastore
connected with Kelly Ryan, who fired the ball past Williams’
goalie for the game-winning point.
Swarthout led the team with two goals, while Buonpastore, Haring,
Ryan, Brady, and Taltavull each managed one goal each. Buonpastore
also dished out two assists in the victory, and Brady tallied three
draw controls. Meg Paul led the defensive charge with four caused
turnovers and four groundballs. Melissa Brashear was a tremendous
force in the net, managing 13 saves and allowing just six
goals.
CUA will now host Mary Washington on Thursday, April 1st, at
Cardinal Stadium at 4 p.m.
