Towson Can't Quite Pull Upset of Maryland
from press release
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Hoping to improve on
one of the best starts in school history, 7th-ranked Towson
University jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first half on
second-ranked Maryland. However, the Terrapins answered and used a
pair of long scoring runs to keep their perfect record intact with
a 12-10 victory over the Tigers at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse
Complex on Wednesday evening.
The Terrapins, who improve to 11-0 with the victory, outscored the
Tigers by an 8-2 margin in the second half to earn their 30th
straight win over their in-state rivals. Meanwhile, the loss
dropped the Tigers’ record to 6-2 and snapped a two-game win
streak.
“I thought we played a great game tonight,” Towson
Coach Missy Doherty said. “Maryland is a great team and they
proved why they are undefeated. We brought everything to them
especially with some tough injuries tonight. The players did a
great job of taking care of the ball, making good decisions and
stepping up their level of play.”
After falling behind by four goals in the first half, the Terrapins
used a five-goal run in the opening 13 minutes of the second half
to take a 9-8 lead with 16:51 left on a goal by sophomore attacker
Karri Ellen Johnson (Broadneck H.S./Annapolis, Md.).
Sophomore midfielder Jackie LaMonica (Hereford H.S./Parkton, Md.)
tied the game at 9-9 with 9:28 remaining, but the Terrapins
answered with three straight goals in a two-minute span to regain a
12-9 cushion with 5:03 remaining. Junior attacker Sarah Mollison
(Melbourne Girls College/Melbourne, Australia) scored a goal with
an assist during the run to lead the Terrapins.
The Tigers scored a late goal in the final two minutes, but were
unable to get any closer.
After senior midfielder Caitlyn McFadden (Notre Dame Prep/Phoenix,
Md.) gave the Terrapins a 1-0 lead early in the first half, the
Tigers responded by scoring four goals in a span of 2 minutes, 20
seconds to take a 4-1 lead with 20:07 left in the period. Junior
attacker Jess Dunn (Fallston H.S./Forest Hill, Md.) scored twice
during the spurt.
The Terrapins answered with back-to-back goals from McFadden and
Mollison to cut the margin to 4-3 with 16:41 left in the first
half. But, the Tigers put together another four-goal run over the
next seven minutes to extend their lead to 8-3 with 8:23 left in
the stanza.
A goal by junior midfielder Laura Merrifield (St. George’s
School/Hertfordshire, England) with 1:16 remaining narrowed the
Terrapins’ deficit to 8-4 at the intermission and set up
their second half comeback.
Mollison scored a game-high four goals and added two assists for
the Terrapins while McFadden contributed a pair of goals with three
assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Jordan (St. Mary’s
H.S./Davidsonville, Md.) made four saves in the win for the
Terrapins after entering the game with 12:10 remaining in the first
half.
Dunn scored three goals to lead the Tigers in a losing effort while
senior midfielder Hillary Fratzke (Queen Anne’s County
H.S./Centreville, Md.) added a pair of goals with an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Teeters (Centennial H.S./Ellicott City,
Md.) posted 12 saves for the Tigers, who were outshot by a 31-19
margin.
The Tigers will open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule
on Saturday afternoon when they host the University of Delaware in
the first game of a doubleheader at 12:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the
Terrapins will travel to the University of Pennsylvania on Friday
night to face the sixth-ranked Quakers at 7 p.m.
