Owl Power: Temple Stuns No. 17 Princeton
from press release
PHILADELPHIA – For the first time since 1998, the
Temple women's lacrosse team beat Princeton after trying in every
season since. The Owls earned a 14-12 victory over the 17th-ranked
Tigers (4-5) to improve to 4-5 overall. Stephanie Markunas, Ann
Stouffer and Charlotte Swavola all recorded hat tricks for Temple,
with Markunas also tallying an assist.
Temple had gone 0-11 against Princeton since 1998. The Owls
trailed early on in today's contest, but a string of six goals in
the middle of the first half gave Temple a lead it would not
relinquish. Also scoring multiple goals for Temple was Chelsea
Rosiek with two, along with a team-high two assists.
Markunas scored her second goal of the day eight minutes into a
high-scoring first half to tie the score at 3-3, but Princeton
scored back-to-back goals to lead 5-3 with 17:43 remaining in the
half.
The Temple run saw five different players score the six goals,
with Stouffer tallying two of them. Missy Schweitzer, Swavola,
Stephany Parcell and Markunas all contributed scores as well.
Princeton then out-scored Temple 3-2 in the final eight minutes of
the half, including one goal with just two seconds remaining.
After the teams scored a combined 19 goals in the first half, the
second half was a different story with only seven total goals. It
was back and forth the entire way, with Princeton scoring first.
Temple had an answer every time as the Owls kept at least a
two-goal cushion throughout.
After Princeton had scored three goals to Temple's two, Allison
McWilliams came up big for the Owls. In one quick play, McWilliams
caused a turnover behind the Princeton net, got the ground ball and
then scored, giving Temple a 14-11 lead with six minutes
remaining.
Lizzy Drumm, Princeton's leading scorer this season who entered
the game with 23 goals, scored only twice in the contest including
the last goal with 1:17 remaining.
Temple goalkeeper Jess Colucci made an impressive season-high 12
saves including seven in the second half to hold off any comeback
hopes for the Tigers.
The Owls will return to the field on Saturday, April 3 in a 1:00
p.m. home game against defending Atlantic 10 champ Massachusetts.
Temple is participating in "2010 Friends of Jaclyn Week," helping
to raise awareness about children with pediatric brain tumors, and
Saturday's game will be specifically dedicated to that cause.
