No. 6 Wahoos Crunch Old Dominion, 22-7
from press release
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 4 Virginia women's
lacrosse team used a balanced team effort, highlighted by 11
different Cavaliers who contributed a point to the attack, to
defeat in-state rival Old Dominion, 22-7, Wednesday evening in
Klöckner Stadium. The scoring output marks the most goals
Virginia has scored in a single contest under head coach Julie
Myers, and the most since the Cavaliers defeated in-state rival
Richmond, 22-7, on April 5, 1994.
The Cavaliers were led offensively by senior All-American Kaitlin
Duff's career-high six goals and seven points, while senior
All-American Brittany Kalkstein added a career-high four goals.
Redshirt senior Whitaker Hagerman added three scores for the
Cavaliers, while freshman Anne Thomas contributed a personal-best
two goals and one point.
Old Dominion (2-4) was led by Saratu Dodo's three goals.
Virginia (8-3, 2-1 ACC) recorded the first goal of the contest, a
score from Whiteley - assisted by Kalkstein, at 29:05. Duff then
gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead with 27:52 on the clock with an
unassisted goal, before Old Dominion rallied for three-straight to
take a 3-2 lead with 22 minutes remaining.
The Cavaliers called a timeout to regroup, and that would be the
only the Monarchs would hold as Virginia received eight goals from
six different players to string together an 8-0 run and take a 10-3
lead with 12:05 left in the half. Kalkstein and Whiteley recorded
dual scores for Virginia in the streak, while Hagerman, Duff and
sophomores Charlie Finnigan and Josie Owen each contributed one
goal.
Old Dominion snapped Virginia's streak at 8:50 and made it
two-straight scores with another goal at 6:35, but the Cavaliers
would answer with two more scores – from Duff and Thomas
– to take a 12-5 lead into halftime.
Virginia tacked on another six goals to open the second half.
Finnigan assisted the first to Kalkstein and followed that up by
assisting Owen at 28:31. Duff then contributed back-to-back goals
before junior Marghi Walters caused a turnover on a clear attempt
by the Monarchs and heaved the ball up field and into the goal for
her first career goal at 19:48.
Whiteley assisted Thomas at 18:49 to cap off the run for the
Cavaliers.
Old Dominion notched a sixth score at 16:39, before another 4-0 run
for Virginia pushed the home team ahead 22-6. Those four goals were
scored by McTiernan, Kalkstein and two from Hagerman - both
assisted by senior Marye Kellermann.
The Monarchs finished the scoring in the game, notching a goal with
just 25 seconds remaining.
Defensively, redshirt junior Lauren Benner stopped seven shots for
the Cavaliers, while freshman Kim Kolarik stopped two.
Sophomore Bailey Fogarty won a career-high six draw controls and
McTiernan collected a personal-best four to lead the Cavaliers to a
21-10 edge over the Monarchs in the category, a season-best for
Virginia.
Up next, the Cavaliers will host their second contest of a
three-game homestand. No. 19 Boston College will visit
Klöckner Stadium on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tilt. Virginia's
seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game as a part of
Senior Day.
