Temple Pulls Away from GW in Second Half
from press release
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Breaking a halftime
tie with four straight goals to open the second half, the Temple
lacrosse team won 11-7 at George Washington (2-9, 0-2) to improve
to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10. Sophomore Missy
Schweitzer led the Owls with three goals and an assist in the
victory.
Senior goalkeeper Jess Colucci tied her season-high with 11 saves
for Temple. The Owls will return home for their next two contests,
starting with a 4:00 p.m. game against #19 Princeton on Wednesday,
March 31.
Things didn’t look good early on for Temple after the Owls
fell in a 4-0 hole, thanks mostly to the Colonials’ Taylor
Donahue who scored three times for GW in the first 13 minutes.
The Owls then began to find their stride offensively, scoring three
in a row with Schweitzer, Shelby Christopher and Charlotte Swavola
all putting TU on the board. After another score from GW,
Schweitzer would go on to record two more tallies to even the score
at 5-5 with just over five minutes left in the first half.
Each team got one more goal over the next two minutes, first a
score by GW and then Stephanie Markunas for Temple, bringing the
score to a 6-6 tie that stood for the remainder of the half.
The Owls then exploded for four early goals in the second half by
Christopher, Chelsea Rosiek, Markunas and Lindsey Colferai.
Markunas tallied assists on Christopher and Colferai’s goals,
while Rosiek and Schweitzer each assisted on one of the other two
tallies.
GW’s Sarah Phillips gave her team one more goal with 18:51
remaining, but it was the last for the Colonials. Temple’s
Ann Stouffer put up the Owls’ 11th goal just after the
10-minute mark, and neither team scored the rest of the way.
