GEORGETOWN, Md. -- Junior Lizzy Drumm scored
the golden goal to lift No. 19 Princeton to a 15-14 overtime win
over No. 9 Georgetown in women's lacrosse on Sunday, March 28 at
Multi-Sport Field.
It was Princeton's first win over a ranked team this season and
second overtime win this season, as the Tigers improve to 4-4.
Georgetown started the game on a 3-0 run in the first 4:30, but
the Tigers settled down and were able to tally three of their own
in the next six minutes to tie the game at 20:44. The Hoyas
regained the lead with a goal by Molly Ford at 18:29 before the
teams traded three-goal runs to give Georgetown the 7-6 lead with
eight minutes to play in the first.
Drumm scored her first of five goals of the day at 7:52 to tie the
game at 7-7 but Georgetown responded 39 seconds later to take an
8-7 lead into the break.
Much like the first half, the teams continued to trade goals and
runs in the second half. Georgetown took a 10-8 lead less than five
minutes into the half, but Drumm scored twice at 20:44 and 17:11 to
knot the game at 10-10. Five minutes later the Hoyas had a two-goal
lead stripped away by Drumm and Morrison to make it 12-12 with less
than 13 minutes to play. The teams traded goals to close out
regulation, with freshman Charlotte Davis scoring the equalizer at
2:52 that would send the game into overtime.
In the first six-minute overtime, it was all Georgetown.
Princeton's Erin Tochihara made two stops on Ashby Kaestner shots
including one with one second on the clock, and another shot by
Jordy Kirr hit the post, while Princeton didn't get an offensive
chance.
Senior Kristin Morrison won the draw to start the six-minute
sudden death overtime and a minute later had a shot collected by
goalie Caitlin Formby. Bringing the ball down the other end
Kaestner sent another shot towards Tochihara but she came up with
the stop. Two more shots would clear wide of the net before the
second required draw control. Winning the draw, Georgetown's Ford
tested Tochihara again but the junior keeper made the save and
Princeton had a good clearing attempt with 2:28 to play. Taking the
ball down the field sophomore Barb Previ found Drumm open for the
goal at 2:04 to give the Tigers the walk off win.
Drumm led the Tigers with five goals while Previ had a four-point
game with two goals and two assists. Allison Behringer had two
goals and one assist, while seven other Tigers had one point.
Tochihara played the first period and made three saves. Senior
Kaitlyn Perrelle started the second in goal and allowed two goals
before Tochihara reentered the game at 14:57. Tochihara finished
the game with 10 total saves while allowing 12 goals.
Kaestner led the Hoyas with four goals and Ford added two as
Georgetown's only multiple-goal scorers. Formby finished the game
making seven saves as the Hoyas fall to 3-5 on the season.
Georgetown had a 33-28 advantage in shots including an 8-2 edge
during the overtimes. The Hoyas also had a 20-14 advantage in
ground balls while Princeton won the draw control battle 20-14.
Princeton will play the final game of its three-game road swing on
Wednesday, March 31 at Temple. Game time is 4 p.m.
