Pompa Powers Mount St. Mary's over RMU

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Lucy Pompa (Baltimore,
Md./Bryn Mawr) scored a career-high five goals to lead Mount St.
Mary's past Robert Morris 16-7 in Northeast Conference (NEC)
women's lacrosse action on Sunday.
Pompa scored two of the Mount's (4-5, 2-1 NEC) first three goals to
help stake the Mountaineers out to a 3-0 advantage. The
junior then completed her second career hat trick with a tally with
4:41 left in the first half before adding two goals in the second
half to complete her career afternoon. Pompa, who notched her third
career multi-goal performance and first since she found the twine
three times in a 22-8 win against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Mar. 22,
2009, also registered five draw controls, two ground balls and a
caused turnover.
"Lucy came out on fire," said head coach Sonia LaMonica. "She has
been on a roll for us in the last couple of games and she has had a
real presence all over the field. She was just everything and all
over the field today and she never let up through the whole
game."
Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) added four goals and
three assists for Mount St. Mary's. Emily Kirby (Reisterstown,
Md./Franklin) added three goals and one assist while senior Jackie
Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) paced the defense with five
caused turnovers, six ground balls and two draw controls. The
senior marked Colonials' leading scorer Ashley Trumbetta for the
entire game and held her to one goal on the afternoon.
"Jackie had a huge game today," said LaMonica. "Her caused
turnovers and interceptions gave up some big plays to spark the
team and give us momentum. "She played a great defensive midfield
for us today."
Ali Gibbons fueled Robert Morris (4-6, 2-2 NEC) with two tallies on
the day while Courtney Sicinski and Alana Beck each added a goal
and an assist in the loss.
The Mount jumped out to an early advantage and never looked back to
earn its fifth win in sixth tries against the Moon Township
program.
Pompa got the Mountaineers scoring started with a free-position
goal 42 seconds into the match. Johnson then feed Kirby 18 seconds
later before Pompa found the twine unassisted at 1:33 for a 3-0
edge.
Colleen O'Donnell got the Colonials on the scoreboard with an
unassisted marker at 3:26 to trim the margin to 3-1.
Mount St. Mary's answered right back with consecutive goals to grab
a 5-1 lead. Johnson connected with Kirby for the second time on the
day at 11:24 before Jordan Certeza (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore
Lutheran) scored unassisted 20 seconds later for a four-goal
margin.
Gibbons momentarily halted the Mount's offensive attack unassisted
at 14:33, but Johnson found the twine unassisted 16:37 and Pompa
completed her second career hat trick at 25:19 for a 7-2
advantage.
Lynette Gomez scored with 2:55 left in the first half to cut the
margin to 7-3 going into halftime.
The Mountaineers then opened the second half with two goals to take
a six-goal lead. Alexis Salerno (South Setauket, N.Y./South Side)
and Meaghan Conlon (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) each converted a
8-meter chance at 32:53 and 34:37, respectively.
Siciinski answered for Robert Morris with an unassisted tally at
36:34 before Johnson feed Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate
Christian Academy) at 37:02. Beck then connected with Trombetta at
40:31 to trim the margin to 10-5, but Mount St. Mary's answered
with four-straight goals to grab a 14-5 lead.
After Pompa started the run with her second free-position goal of
the afternoon at 42:56, Kirby found the twine off an Allie Fife
(Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) feeder at 44:36. Johnson then
scored unassisted 17 seconds later before Kirby returned the favor
to Johnson at 47:37 for a nine-goal margin.
"Ashley is continuing to prove why she should be a captain," said
LaMonica. "She has been stepping up and being a finisher on offense
for us all year."
Beck momentarily halted the Mountaineers run unassisted at 48:28,
but Pompa scored unassisted to complete her five-goal performance
at 49:27 and Certeza set up Johnson at 53:21 to hand Mount St.
Mary's a 16-6 lead.
Gibbons scored unassisted with 39 seconds left, but the Mount came
away with a 16-7 victory to improve to 2-1 in league play.
"Today was a great demonstration of us playing a full 60 minutes
and that was our goal," said LaMonica. "It gives us huge momentum
and we are looking for that to continue in our upcoming games."
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made four saves for
Mount St. Mary's while Erica Webb turned away seven shots for
Robert Morris.
Along with her goal, Rufolo registered four draw controls while
Salerno posted a marker, two ground balls and two caused turnovers
in the win.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday at Sacred Heart.
Game time is 3 p.m.
