No. 12 Vanderbilt Wins Sixth Straight Game
from press release
NEWARK, Del. -- The No. 12 Vanderbilt
University women’s lacrosse team jumped out to a commanding
6-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of play to help the visiting
Commodores upend the University of Delaware, 15-7, at Rullo Stadium
on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory over Delaware (3-6 overall), Vanderbilt (7-3
overall) has now won six consecutive games and seven of its last
eight contests, while the Blue Hens have dropped two of their most
recent three.
Over a seven-minute period the Commodores netted six consecutive
goals to open action before the Hens could break the ice and
collect a score at 19:25. A Delaware goalkeeper substitution aided
in the teams exchanging three goals apiece over the latter 20
minutes of the first frame to enter intermission at 9-3.
Despite the even play, Vanderbilt opened the second stint with
another streak, this time a four-goal run. But the Hens answered
with three of their own to bring the game to 13-6. The Commodores
went on to score two of the final three goals to defeat the Hens
for the third consecutive time and knot the all-time series
head-to-head at 3-3.
Senior Carter Foote led the game with five goals and an assist and
sophomore Alex Priddy came off the bench to add three scores for
the Commodores. Two additional players added a pair of goals,
including sophomore Ally Carey who had two assists and game-highs
of nine ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Junior Holly Burman led UD with two goals and an assist and senior
Morgan Marino also tallied two scores for the Blue and Gold.
An Ali Libertini assist helped Burman (at right) to score her first
at 19:25 and snap Vandy’s six-goal streak that welcomed the
visiting team to Rullo Stadium. Foote reinstated the six-goal
advantage on a Hannah Clark assist before Burman struck again.
Burman’s free-position goal at 14:52 brought the score to
7-2, but Vanderbilt notched a pair of scores to lead 9-2 at 9:25.
The last nine minutes of the half saw little action in comparison
to the first two thirds as a man-up free-position goal by Delaware
sophomore Blair King was the only score.
The Commodores’ dominating four-goal performance that opened
the second half awarded the Tennessee team a 10-goal advantage and
a running clock at the 20-minute mark. Though Delaware put an end
to that less than two minutes later as senior Emily Schaknowski
kicked off a three-goal UD spurt.
Schaknowski was unassisted at 18:56, while Marino capitalized on
another Libertini feed to find the back of the net at 16:34.
Libertini then scored one of her own thanks to a Corrine Drost pass
at 13:26 to bring the game to 13-6.
The contest was held scoreless for well over seven minutes before
Vanderbilt scored two to finalize its scoring with a Clark-to-Carey
goal at 2:33. Marino scored her second of the day on a Burman pass
with 1:49 lingering on the clock to close out the day’s
action.
Statistically the Commodores outdid the Hens in most every
category: shots (42-22), groundballs (32-27), draw controls (15-9),
and turnovers (20-24).
Delaware’s junior Makenzie Worthington suffered the loss in
goal for the Hens having given up six goals and making one save in
8:57 before sophomore Dana Mazzarella relieved her and played the
final 51:03. Mazzarella, who saw her first collegiate action, made
nine stops while allowing nine goals. Vanderbilt’s sophomore
Natalie Willis recorded the win, her seventh of the season, with a
seven goal-seven save appearance.
Delaware will next take to the road to open Colonial Athletic
Association play at No. 10 Towson on Saturday, April 3 at 12:30
p.m.
