from press release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – For the third
consecutive season, sixth-ranked Syracuse posted a victory in its
BIG EAST opener, defeating Rutgers, 17-10, on Sunday, March, 28 in
the Carrier Dome. The Orange netted 13 goals in the first half,
which is its highest total in a half this season.
After Rutgers (6-3, 0-2) scored the game’s first goal, senior
Jackie DePetris found the back of the net off an assist from Halley
Quillinan to tie the score and spark Syracuse (5-3, 1-0) on a 4-0
scoring run. Senior Christina Dove had two goals and an assist and
junior Tee Ladouceur added a goal and an assist during the run as
SU built a 4-1 advantage. Leading 8-4, the Orange netted four
consecutive goals by four different players and led 12-4 with 55
seconds remaining in the half. Rutgers halted the run with Marlena
Welsh’s goal with 20 seconds left on the clock, but sophomore
Sarah Holden registered her first goal of the game on an assist
from freshman Michelle Tumolo with three seconds remaining to give
the Orange a 13-5 halftime advantage.
The squads traded goals to start the second half before freshman
Tegan Brown and Tumolo found the back of the net to give Syracuse
its largest lead of the day, 16-6, with 24:36 left on the clock.
The Scarlet Knights scored four of the game’s final five
goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Orange posted a 17-10
victory.
“My goal, from day one, was to create an offense where you
could attack from behind, up top, left, right and really create
some balance,” said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. “And
so far, they’ve done a pretty good job. We certainly have a
couple players dominating, but everybody does their part and
everybody gets opportunities. Hopefully we’ll all continue to
improve and even get better on the offense end.”
Dove finished the game with four goals and a team-best four assists
for a game-high eight points, while Ladouceur recorded five goals
to go along with an assist. Quillinan had two goals and two assists
and set a career high with five caused turnovers. DePetris added
two goals, and Tumolo recorded two goals and an assist. Brooke
Cantwell led Rutgers with four goals.
The Orange outshot Rutgers, 36-26, and won 16-of-29 draw controls.
Syracuse picked up 12 ground balls to four for Rutgers. Syracuse
goalkeeper Liz Hogan made 13 saves, marking the third time this
season she has reached double figures in saves in a game. Lily
