UMBC Edges Stony Brook in Overtime

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Junior Samantha Djaha (East
Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Jessica Romano (Massapequa, N.Y.) each
scored two goals, but Amanda Pappas scored with four seconds left
in overtime to lead UMBC over Stony Brook, 10-9, on Saturday at
LaValle Stadium in the America East opener for both teams. Junior
Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tallied a goal and three assists for
the Seawolves (2-8, 0-1), who were 21-of-24 on clear attempts. UMBC
is 7-3, 1-0.
Stony Brook, which rallied from a three-goal deficit in the first
half, took its first lead of the game when Romano scored off an
assist from Cook at 3:09 of overtime. UMBC tied the game at 1:50 on
a free-position goal from Alicia Krause, and took the lead 14
seconds later on a free-position goal from Emily Coady. Junior
Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) won the ensuing draw and,
eventually, the ball got to Cook, who was fouled, setting up a
free-position attempt. Cook went to the goal, spun and scored,
tying the game at nine with 52 seconds left. Pappas notched the
game winner 48 seconds later.
Junior Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.), who had a game-high four draw
controls, scored 2:05 into the second half as the Seawolves rallied
to tie the game 4-4. The Retrievers led 7-5 after Pappas' second of
the day. Freshman Nicolle Moran (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made it a
one-goal affair, scoring on a free-position attempt with 15:32 left
in regulation.
Romano sent the game into overtime with a goal at 1:23 of the
second half. She also had a free-position attempt with 43 seconds
left, but it sailed wide.
Junior Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.) finished with 10 saves. Cook
also recorded three ground balls.
