Markwordt Leads OSU Over Florida
from press release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's
lacrosse team closed out a four-game home stand by defeating
Florida, 14-9, Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Alayna Markwordt led all goal scorers with five tallies, as the
Buckeyes improved to 6-3 on the season and 1-1 in the ALC. Florida
dropped to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Kelly Haggerty joined Markwordt with four goals, while Britteny
Zerhusen had three and Jayme Beard and Gabby Capuzzi each scored a
single. In goal, Annie Carruthers followed up her 22-save
performance against Northwestern earlier this week with 15 saves
vs. the Gators. The junior Columbus Academy product now has tallied
at least 10 saves in five of eight games this season.
The teams swapped scores over the first 20-plus minutes of the
game, playing to a 5-5 score by the 8:10 mark in the first half.
Haggerty then scored on back-to-back shots, both off assists from
Beard, to take a 7-5 lead into the half.
The Buckeyes' momentum continued in the second half as Capuzzi,
Beard and Zerhusen came to life and rattled off the next three
goals to build a 10-5 lead, their largest of the game.
Back-and-forth play kept the game within four or five until the
19:47 mark when Ohio State held the 12-8 lead.
From there, it took nearly 13 minutes to find the back of the net,
until Markwordt ended the drought with 6:26 to play and Haggerty
scored her fourth two minutes later to take a 14-8 lead.
Janine Hillier scored for Florida with just over three minutes
remaining to cap the scoring.
The teams matched up well on the field with Ohio State
holding a narrow 30-29 advantage in shots, while the Gators held
the edge in groundballs, 26-19. The Buckeyes controlled 11 draws,
compared to 14 by Florida.
