Hokies Win for First Time at Old Dominion
from press release
NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse
team earned its first-ever road win over Old Dominion as a late
free position goal from sophomore Jessica Nonn earned Tech the,
13-12, victory. Nonn also paced the Hokie offense in the game with
four goals, while Ashely Kellogg and Lisa Bernardini also tallied
four apiece for Old Dominion.
After allowing the Lady Monarchs (2-3) to get on the board first,
the Hokies (4-7) got out to an early, 3-1, lead with goals from
Allie Emala, Caitlyn Wier and Morgan Widlake. Tech let the lead go,
allowing ODU to score two in a row before back-and-forth scoring
took over the half.
Just inside the halfway mark of the first period, Ryan Rotanz would
spark a four-goal run for the Hokies. The stretch was broken up,
with two minutes remaining, when Kellogg and Bernardini buried two
quick ones for the Lady Monarchs.
With under a minute remaining in the half, Nonn found the back of
the net for the second time in the game to give Tech the 9-6 edge
heading into the locker room.
Tech came out of the break picking up where they left off, putting
two goals away in the opening minute as Rotanz and Nonn connected
on the first and then Nonn got one on her own. Bernardini was able
to break the Hokies’ run and chip away at Tech’s lead
with two quick, unassisted scores and later added another to make
the game 12-9.
The Lady Monarchs broke up a nearly ten minute scoring drought by
both teams when Saratu Dodo scored her second goal of the day en
route to a fierce ODU comeback that eventually tied the game at 12
apiece with just over two minutes to go.
Neither team held an advantage in the closing minutes of play, but
Nonn was fouled inside the shooting space in an attempt to take the
lead, which gave her another chance to sink her initially wide
shot. With a clear path to the goal in the free position attempt,
Nonn buried the ball in the back of the goal and later controlled
the following draw to secure the victory.
Freshman Alex Gale made her second consecutive start in goal, fifth
on the year, finishing the day with 10 saves in 60 minutes played.
For the Monarchs, Sarah Geary defended the goal and made 14 saves
in 60 minutes played.
