from press release
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate scored the
final six goals of the game to overcome a three-goal deficit in a
14-11 victory over visiting Marist in a non-conference
women’s lacrosse match-up Saturday afternoon at Tyler’s
Field.
Trailing 11-8 with 15:28 remaining, the Raiders, who evened their
record at 5-5, took command of the contest. Colgate received
back-to-back goals from Greer Goebels (Coronado, Calif.) in a
26-second span and then tied the game with 10:46 left on the clock
as Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) set up Courtney Miller
(Chappaqua, N.Y.) from behind the cage for the sophomore’s
20th of the year. Lawler came back to post the game winner
with 9:33 left to give the Raiders the lead for good on her 19th of
the year. Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Miller added
late insurance goals down the stretch to cement the win.
Colgate improved to 5-0 all-time versus Marist in women’s
lacrosse.
The Raiders jumped out to what appeared to be a comfortable
four-goal lead in the first 21 minutes of the opening half.
Back-to-back goals by Quincey Spagnoletti (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and
Miller gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead in the first 5:23 of the
contest. After the Red Foxes got on the board with 24:25 left
in the opening half, Bubnack increased the lead to 4-1 with two
goals in a 1:37 span. Kate Sullivan (Cockeysville, Md.) set
up Miller with 9:22 left to give Colgate its largest lead at
5-1.
However, Marist, which tumbled to 2-5 overall, wouldn’t go
quietly. The Red Foxes battled back and pulled within one
with three goals in 114 seconds. The half ended on a crazy
pace as Miller teamed up with Lawler for the senior’s first
of three goals with 21 seconds left to give Colgate a two-goal
advantage. But, Marist won the draw control and marched down
field. Ariel Kramer’s shot with eight seconds left
brought the Red Foxes within one again right before
intermission.
Marist came out strong in the second half scoring six of the first
eight goals. Back-to-back goals by Lauren Ciccarello gave the
Red Foxes their first lead at 7-6 with 23:02 left. The lead
grew to 8-6 on Kramer’s second of the contest less than a
minute later. Miller ended Marist’s stretch of four
consecutive goals with her 19th at 21:25 to bring Colgate back
within one. Both teams traded goals as Lindsay Rinefierd and
Lawler scored with 20:28 and 19:52 respectively before the Red
Foxes scored twice to take their three-goal lead.
Miller finished with a season-high six-point afternoon on five
goals and one assist, while Lawler posted three goals and four
assists for a season-high seven-point performance versus the Red
Foxes. That effort moved her into ninth on Colgate’s
all-time point list passing Kara Keenan. Lawler now has 110
goals and 65 assists for 175 points. She also pulled within
three helpers from moving into second on the Raiders’ career
assist charts. Bubnack ended with three goals, while Goebels
posted her first collegiate multi-goal game. Alex Kuntz
(Annapolis, Md.) scooped up a career-high eight ground balls in the
victory.
Marist held a 33-28 shot advantage. Colgate net minder
Christina Roa (Potomac, Md.) saved 13 to improve to 5-5 overall,
while Alyssa Littin stopped eight in defeat.
Rinefierd scored three times to lead the Red Foxes. Kramer
finished with two goals and two assists.
