No. 13 Boston U. Overcomes Ugly First Half
from press release
VESTAL, N.Y. - Trailing 5-2 at the half, the
No. 13 Boston University women's lacrosse team scored three quick
goals in the second en route to a 11-8 victory at Binghamton
Saturday afternoon. Senior McKinley Curro led the Terriers (5-4,
1-0 America East) with four goals and an assist in the league
opener for both squads.
The Terriers entered the game having won their last 23 games
against conference opponents and got on the board just 24 seconds
into the game on a tally by freshman Kristen Mogavero, but
Binghamton scored five of the next six goals to take a 5-2 lead
into the break.
BU, however, rebounded nicely in the second half with an 8-1 run
spanning just over 19 minutes to take a lead they would not
relinquish. Curro tallied all four of her goals during the stretch
and scored two of BU's five free-position tallies in the half.
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Klein recorded nine saves in the game and
junior Lauren Scott made 10 stops in goal for the Bearcats.
BU outshot Binghamton, 28-23, and won 12 of the game's 21 draw
controls. The Bearcats held a slim 19-17 edge in ground balls.
Redshirt freshman Brittany Carlin posted a game-high three caused
turnovers and led the Terriers in ground balls with four. Seniors
Traci Landy (2g, 1a) and Xan Weitzel (1g, 2a) each contributed
three points on the day, while Mogavero added a pair of goals and
junior Rachel Collins registered a goal and an assist.
Binghamton (0-6, 0-1 AE) was paced by a three-goal effort from
junior Ali Castiglie. Classmate Beth Moore and freshman Lindsay
Angelillo each posted two goals and Moore recorded a game-best six
ground balls.
Landy opened the scoring in the second half just 3:21 into the
stanza before Curro tied the game with back-to-back tallies in the
next 1:12 of play. Binghamton briefly regained the lead at 6-5 on
Angelillo's first tally of the day with 20:53 remaining, but the
Terriers reeled off the game's next five goals to complete the
decisive run.
