UMass Beats GW in A-10 Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Paced by four point games
from Jackie Lyons and Jesse O'Donnell, the UMass women's lacrosse
team began its Atlantic 10 schedule with a 13-7 win at George
Washington on Friday afternoon. The Minutewomen outscored the
Colonials 8-1 in the second half after a back-and-forth first half
sent UMass to the locker room trailing at halftime. UMass returns
to action on Sunday at Richmond (Noon).
Lyons and O'Donnell each tallied three goals and an assist, while
five other Minutewomen tallied goals.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Minutewomen who
improve to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in the A-10. George Washington falls
to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in league play.
UMass outshot the Colonials 25-to-19 and held a 16-to-6 advantage
in draw controls for the game. The Minutewomen were also a perfect
11-for-11 in clearing opportunities.
George Washington led 6-5 at halftime thanks to goals from Nicole
Lacey and Sarah Phillips giving the Colonials a 6-4 lead with 8:24
remaining in the first. O'Donnell scored her second goal of the
game with 6:15 remaining to bring UMass within a goal, but neither
team was able to score in the final moments of the period.
O'Donnell picked up where she left off notching her third goal of
the game 3:13 into the second half to tie the game before Danielle
Pelletier scored 31 seconds later to give UMass a 7-6 lead. Megan
Seidiman scored for GW to tie the game once again, but the
Colonials were shutout for the next 24:54 of the half.
The Minutewomen scored six unanswered goals in the final 24 minutes
of the game sparked by two from Lyons and two from Ali Houlis. The
UMass defense forced seven of George Washington's 12 turnovers in
that stretch while the Minutewomen were also able to hold the
Colonials to just four shots in the final 20 minutes of play.
Katie Florence earned the win in goal for UMass making eight saves,
while Liz Hoffman made five saves taking the loss for George
Washington.
