Richmond Holds Off Temple in A-10 Opener
from press release
RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond (4-6, 1-0) withstood a
late Owl (2-5, 0-1) rally to record its first A-10 win of the
season in a 15-14 victory over Temple Friday afternoon at UR
Stadium. Three different Spiders recorded hat tricks.
Gabi Wiegand, Mary Flowers and Sam Stevenson each recorded three
goals apiece.
"It is great to start conference play with a win," said head coach
Stephy Samaras. "Temple was scrappy and picked up their play at the
end of the game which reminded us we need to play strong for 60
minutes."
Richmond cruised in the early going, taking a 9-5 advantage with
just under seven minutes to play in the first half. Temple rallied
with two goals to close the half at 9-7.
Richmond seized momentum in the opening minutes of the second half
with four unanswered goals, three of which were unassisted tallies,
to lead 13-7 with 18:49 remaining. The Spiders' strong defensive
corp led by senior Alexis Brennan and Bria Eulitt kept the Owl
offense at bay for the majority of this span.
Temple would recover with four unanswered goals of its own to cut
the deficit to 13-11 with just under 10 to play.
Two back-to-back goals from Wiegand and Flowers seemingly put the
game out of reach at 15-11 with five minutes to play, but two
costly yellow cards kept Temple's hopes alive.
Ryan Ball and senior goalkeeper Erica Marrocco each received the
penalty within 30 seconds of each other putting Richmond in a
two-man down position.
The Owls took advantage of this mismatch by lasering in three goals
within a 40 second span to cut the deficit to 15-14.
The Spiders seized timely draw controls to regain possession and
seal the win.
Kara Moschetti and Danielle Schaevitz added two goals apiece. Five
Spiders recorded assists, with Moschetti leading the charge with
two.
Richmond recorded a game-high 15 ground balls and Marrocco
collected a game-high 13 saves in the net.
