Monmouth Downs RMU for Fourth Straight

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University lacrosse team defeated Robert Morris, 12-5 in Northeast Conference action on Friday afternoon at Kessler Field. The Hawks, winners of four straight, improve to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Colonials fall to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

With the contest knotted at 2-2, MU ended the half on a 3-0 scoring run, started when senior Shawn Evans (Moorestown, N.J. /Moorestown) scored on a free position for Monmouth to give the Hawks a one goal advantage with 5:56 left in the first half.

The hosts took a two-goal advantage less than five minutes later when senior Brittney McLaughlin scored, and she ended the half's scoring when she assisted on classmate Ali Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y. /Shaker) goal with 1:09 left. The Hawks dominated the shot category over the Colonials in the opening half, 19-5.

The Hawks continued their stellar play in the second half, outscoring the Colonials 7-3 after intermission. MU seized control of the contest with a 4-0 scoring spurt in the middle of the second half, paced by three goals in a row from Pollock, to push its advantage to 11-3.

The senior from upstate New York led the team with four goals, while Evans added two tallies, an assist, three ground balls and two ground controls. Carissa Franzi (Fairfield, N.J. /West Essex) contributed two goals as well, adding four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Freshman Kirstyn Urbas (Sewall, N.J. /Washington Township) added a goal, a pair of ground balls and a team-high six draw controls.

Reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Week Kirby Mundorf (Catonsville, Md. /Seton Keough) made eight saves in goal to record the win. The Hawks outshot RMU 37-18 in the game, and also won 12 out of 19 draw controls.

Ashley Trombetta led the Colonials with two goals in the contest.
