Drexel Doubles Up St. Mary's 16-8
from press release
MORAGA, Calif. - Sophomore Charlotte Wood
poured in five goals including the first three of a five-goal run
that helped Drexel to a 16-8 victory over Saint Mary's. The
match-up was the first all-time between the two squads. The
Dragons' victory moved them to 8-1 on the season and tied their win
total from a season ago. Katie Lawson and Becca Drylie-Perkins each
added three goals apiece while the Gaels (3-5) were led by Amy
Daniels who recorded three goals.
The Dragons got off to a fantastic start as seniors Lawson and
Drylie-Perkins each had two goals within the game's first 10
minutes to give the visitors an early 4-0 lead. Daniels finally got
the Gaels on the board but Wood took a pass from Drylie-Perkins for
her first of five goals. Following the score with 16:59 remaining,
neither team was able to find the back of the net for nearly 14
minutes. Juliet Monroe brought Saint Mary's to within three goals
with an unassisted score. Drexel was able to get some breathing
room with a strange turn of events. With just 20 seconds remaining,
Lawson converted a free-position shot to complete her hat trick.
The Dragons had another goal added to their total when the Gaels
inadvertently put the ball in their own net with just one second
remaining in the period.
The Dragons continued the momentum in the second half as Kelli
Joran put home a free-position shot just 39 seconds into the
period. Saint Mary's battled back with three straight scores to
bring the Drexel lead to just three goals at 8-5. Wood and Alyse
Maiden responded with goals but the Gaels got the two right back
with scores from Katie Nelson and Daniels. Drylie-Perkins and St.
Mary's Sarah Howard then exchanged scores before Wood ignited the
game ending 5-0 run with the first of three straight unassisted
scores in a span of 1:04. Maiden and Catalina Friscia capped the
game's scoring with goals to seal the win.
In addition to her second-half opening goal, Joran recorded a
game-high four draw controls though the Gaels held a slim 13-12
edge on draws for the game. Drexel outshot Saint Mary's, 30-20,
with Wood firing 10 shots with all five of her shots on goal
finding the back of the net. Drexel was also solid from 8-meters
out as the Dragons converted four of their five free-position
shots. Whitney Johnson made five saves and allowed six goals in
just over 50 minutes of action before giving way to Rachael Behrndt
in net. Whitney Campitiello made six saves for the Gaels.
