No. 15 Loyola Coasts Past Stony Brook

BALTIMORE - Grace Gavin scored five goals, and Emily
Gibson had four, as the Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse
used four first-half runs to jump out to an early lead en route to
an 18-7 victory over visiting Stony Brook on Awalt Field at Ridley
Athletic Complex.
Gavin recorded a team-high seven points, as she added a pair of
assists, while Gibson also tallied two assists to finish with six
points. The seven points for Gavin is the most for a Greyhound in a
single game this season. In all, seven Loyola players recorded at
least two points.
Fifthteenth-ranked Loyola (7-3 overall) scored the first four goals
of the game with Cara Filippelli tallying a pair wrapped around
scores by Grace Gavin and Abby Rehfuss, in the first five
minutes.
Jackie Hughes put Stony Brook (2-7) on the board with 23:47 to go
in the first half, but Caroline Hager, Gibson and Gavin scored for
Loyola to put the Greyhounds up 7-1 with just over 16 mintues to
play.
Kaitlyn Harrison scored for the Seawolves, but Kelly Quinlan,
Gibson, Joanna Dalton and Gavin struck again for Loyola before
Melissa Cook broke the run with a Stony Brook goal at 6:16.
Loyola closed out the first half on another run, this one 3-0.
Gavin scored once, and Gibson added two more for the
Greyhounds.
Each team scored four goals in the second half, with Gavin, Helen
McCutcheon, Kathleen Barranco and Joanna Dalton each tallying
scores for the Greyhounds.
Kerry Stoothoff got the win for the Greyhounds, making three saves.
Meg Steffe and Courtney Burhans also saw time in net with Burhans
stopping two shots.
The Greyhounds outshot the Seawolves, 40-18, for the game including
a 22-10 advantage in the first stanza. Loyola also held a 26-18
advantage in ground balls and 19-8 on draw controls.
Gibson led the team with five draw controls, while Meg Decker,
Gavin and Rehfuss each had four. Gibson also led the team with four
caused turnovers, while Gavin had three. Gavin, Rehfuss and
Filippelli all had a team-high three ground balls.
Loyola has ten days off before they kick off the remainder of the
BIG EAST season schedule after defeating Rutgers two weeks ago. The
Greyhounds host Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m on Saturday, April 3 at the
Ridley Athletic Complex. Two days later, they will host #11 Notre
Dame on Monday, April 5 at 12:00 p.m.
`Hounds Hodgepodge: With seven points, Grace Gavin
now has 166 career points, which is one away from 11th place
all-time at Loyola... Gavin's five goals gave her 125 for her
career, tying her for 12th all-time at Loyola... Abby Rehuss and
Emily Gibson both broke the 100 draw control mark and now have 103
for their careers, tying them for ninth all-time... Ashley Cahill
recorded a pair of assists, her first two collegiate points...
Kathleen Barranco's goal with 8:46 in regulation was her first
career goal.
