Gandolfi, No. 19 Hofstra Rout Oregon
from press release
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Senior midfielder Corrine Gandolfi
scored a career-high seven goals on nine shots, while adding five
draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover to lead the
#19 Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a dominating 21-8 victory over
Oregon on Monday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The win was Hofstra's third straight and improves the Pride's
record to 6-2 this season. Oregon sees its record fall to 4-4 in
2010.
The game marked the final non-conference home game of the season
for Hofstra, which will travel to Stanford next Wednesday for a 6
p.m. contest before beginning Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)
play on April 9 at home against William & Mary (7 p.m.).
The 21 goals tied Hofstra's season-high established back on
February 20 in a 21-3 win over St. Mary's (CA).
Gandolfi's career-high broke her previous high of six goals set
against Drexel last April. In addition, her seven points in the
game today tied her career-high, last reached in the Pride's 17-7
win over Stony Brook on March 17. In Hofstra's last two games
Gandolfi has totaled 11 goals and three assists.
It was all Hofstra in the first half as the Pride jumped out to a
13-5 halftime advantage led by Gandolfi. The senior All-American
from Smithtown, NY led all scorers in the first 30 minutes with six
goals, while junior attack Stephanie Rice added three goals.
The Ducks got on the board first in the game as Maggie Kovacs put
Oregon up 1-0 at the 28:15 mark before Hofstra took control and
scored six straight goals to lead 6-1 with 21:57 to play before
intermission following the third of Gandolfi's seven tallies on the
day.
Oregon would make a bit of a run after Hofstra took the five-goal
advantage as Jana Drummond scored a pair of goals during a 3-0
Ducks run that cut the Pride lead to 6-4 with just under 20 minutes
left in the half.
That would be as close as Oregon would get, though, as Hofstra
followed with seven consecutive goals to take a commanding 13-4
lead with 5:09 remaining.
After leading 13-5 at the break, Hofstra put to rests any thoughts
of an Oregon comeback as the Pride scored five of the first six
goals in the second stanza and led 18-6 after an unassisted tally
from freshman attack Claire Brady with 11:55 left in the
contest.
Freshman attack Lauren Chandler would close the scoring in the game
as she found the net twice in the final two-plus minutes to allow
Hofstra to earn the 21-8 victory.
Senior defense Bryana Borrelli had a solid afternoon for Hofstra as
she contributed a game and career-high four caused turnovers and
tied her career-high with three ground balls.
