Doused: UC Davis Blanks Flames, 21-0
from press release
LORETTO, Pa. - Freshman Anna Geissbuhler scored four goals
with two assists while junior Gina Hoffmire added a hat trick to
lead UC Davis to a 21-0 shutout over Liberty in a non-conference
women's collegiate lacrosse game at Saint Francis University Monday
afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 6-1 for the year. The Flames slip to 1-5
overall in their inaugural season.
The four-goal output represents the third straight hat trick for
Geissbuhler. Senior midfielders Molly Lapolla and Britt Farquharson
each tallied two goals and three assists, the latter number marking
a career high for Farquharson. Laura Martin, Molly Peterson, Molly
Carstensen and Elizabeth Datino each added two goals for UC Davis,
which matched its season-best scoring output.
The Aggies outshot the Flames by a 32-7 margin, including a 23-3
edge in the first half. Hoffmire scored all three of her goals in
the first eight minutes of play, converting two Lapolla assists in
the 7-0 start. UC Davis put the 10-goal rule (a running clock after
goals) with 19 minutes remaining in the first on Datino's first
goal. Datino hit her second in the final seconds before halftime,
sending the Aggies to the break with a 13-0 lead.
UC Davis continued its onslaught early in the second period,
continuing to strike until Geissbuhler planted her second and third
goals in the 39th and 42nd minutes, respectively. She then assisted
Carstensen on the team's 20th goal with 15:09 remaining. The Aggies
pulled up on the reins after that point, taking only one shot -- a
Geissbuhler attempt in transition at the 9:09 mark that brought the
score to its final 21-0 tally -- in the final 15 minutes. That goal
was initiated by Aggie freshman Tess Alekna's ground ball, one of a
season-best six on the day for her.
Monday's win represents the ninth shutout in school hisory, and the
sixth against a non-club, NCAA-countable program. It is the first
since UC Davis blanked Division III Wittenberg in 2007, and the
widest shutout margin since a 23-0 victory against Lees McRae in
2003.
The Aggies continue their Spring Break trip in Pennsylvania with a
contest at Lehigh on Tuesday. Game time is 4 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m.
PDT).
