Villanova Throttles Iona; Big East Play Next

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Senior Sarah Berger tallied
six points and junior Rachel Lasda added three goals and an assist
to help lead Villanova (6-1 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST) to a 20-5
victory over Iona (2-4 overall, 0-0 MAAC) in a women's lacrosse
game played on a warm, sunny spring afternoon at Villanova
Stadium.
The Wildcats took control early and never looked back, building a
13-3 halftime advantage. They owned a 31-10 advantage in shots and
21-4 edge in draws controlled on the day.
Senior Samantha McKillip got the `Cats into the scoring column
first off a feed from sophomore Justine Donodeo at 28:42 and that
was followed by scores off the sticks of Rachel Lasda and Carly
Miller to make it 3-0 before the game was nine minutes old. After
an Iona score by Brittney Mabus at 20:55, the Wildcats scored the
next three goals as freshman Maria Bowman, Berger and senior Erica
Rybinski found the back of the net to make it 6-1.
A Courtney Hocking goal for the Gaels narrowed the lead to 6-2
before Villanova reeled off six consecutive goals from Donodeo,
Bowman, Rybinski, senior Kyler O'Shea, Lasda and Donodeo to make it
12-2.
VU held a 13-3 edge at halftime and cruised home in the second half
to the win. Junior Maggie Langan earned the victory in net by
making three saves before she was relieved midway through the
second half by senior Cassie Eure.
On Friday evening the Wildcats will put their 6-1 record on the
line in the their first ever BIG EAST game when they host
Georgetown at 6:00 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
